Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 12: April 15, 1894 The outside spout has in it a series of short iron spouts which are so constructed that they may be placed within one another. These separate joints are raised and lowered at will by a chain which runs down the center of the distributing spout, connects with a bar attached to the iron sides and at the bottom to the plug. It also has a weight attached which keeps the joints of the interior spout in their proper posi tions. The chain passes over a pulley above the jointed spout and is wound or unwound by a crank below the distributer, at the same time registering on the indicator the disposition of the grain. Down the sides of the distributer spouts are arranged, leading to different bins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 11: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Elevator and Grain Interests; March 15, 1893 The tools used by an inspector consist Of a trier and a test scale. The former is a steel tube four feet in length, having a sharp end and elliptical slots at every few inches along one side of its length. It is fitted with a hardwood plunger, carefully turned so as to fit the tube closely but not tightly, its handle protruding about eight inches from the upper end of the trier, making the instrument, when not in use, look some thing like a Japanese sword. The test scale is a substantial brass affair. It has a detachable bucket with a capacity of about two quarts. This bucket is filled with grain level with the brim, and when hung on the scale shows by a graduated bar the exact weight per measured bushel of wheat. The weight alone does not de termine the grade, but is only one of sev eral considerations taken into account by the inspector. The working hours of track and house-inspectors are from 7 A. M to 6 P. M. In summer, and from 8 A. M. To 5 P. M. In winter, but they are required to put in extra time when necessary. The water will be conducted to the wheel from a canal near the top of the cliff by an eight-foot pipe extending down ward until it reaches the mill, located near the foot of the cliff. The water will enter the cylinder casing of the wheel from below, passing upward a few feet, filling the case, and thus obtaining the head pressure. The amount Of head will be about 130 feet; the wheel being some 67 inches in diameter, a Speed of 225 revolutions will be obtained, and almost or quite 1 200-horse power developed. The runner is made of bronze, with a very strong, heavy iron center, all nicely proportioned and designed, and the mechanical construction finely executed. The wheel will con hect direct to the powerful wood grinding machinery, obviating entirely the use of the gears or belts. The machines will be located on each side Of the wheel, affording a very simple design and arrangement for the whole plant. Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 19: November 15, 1900 Sometimes we hear a shipper say, It doesn't pay to reclean grain, or, I have to take the weights at the other end, or within 1 per cent, so I'll just add 1 per cent to start with. What would the shipper say if he knew that the buyer deliberately stole 1 per cent? And the buyer has as much right to do it as the shipper has to add that much to his weights. Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 10: December 15, 1891 It may seem incredible that Brockman, the St. Louis commission man, should have advanced before discovering the alleged fraud, but he says it was all done within a period of two or three weeks. The magnitude of the business may be inferred from the fact that there were eighty-three cars of grain on track at Council Bluffs in one day recently. The Union Elevator at that point seems to have been the key to the scheme attributed to the Browns, and a very convenient one it was. The Brown Bros. Have had a through rate, with the privilege of stopping the grain at the Union Elevator to be cleaned and then reshipped. Brockman charges that in some cases the Browns had grain shipped to the Union. Elevator for Brown Bros. Of St. Louis, in care of Brown Bros., Omaha. On the bills of lading the Browns drew on the St. Louis man and got their cash. After the grain had been cleaned at the elevator it was reshipped over one of the Iowa roads to Chicago or Baltimore, the Browns claiming that they could get better prices East than at St. Louis. Brockman had an agreement under which he was to receive a half a cent a bushel commission on all grain handled by the Browns, so he didn't care where it was sold. He now charges that a great deal of this g.ain has disappeared, that he has not been paid by the Eastern buyers, and that the Browns have not reimbursed him. He concludes that. In reshipping the grain the Browns _got new bills of lading from the Iowa roads, and used them in making drafts on the Eastern buyers, thus apparently getting double price for the grain, and letting Brockman whistle for his money.
