The increase of globalized manufacturing and foreign direct investments in the past decades had major implications for manufacturing firms. Intra-organizational manufacturing activities are conducted nowadays within networks of factories dispersed worldwide. The term international manufacturing networks (IMNs) established in literature to describe this phenomenon. Although the literature is rich in providing insights on how to organize single factories to be aligned with manufacturing strategy, until now, scholars neglected to investigate how IMNs need to be structured to be in line with and support a manufacturing strategy. Thus, this dissertation examined the fit between fundamental elements characterizing strategy, configuration, and coordination of IMNs. It thereby enhanced the management theory of IMNs and provided valuable information guiding managers towards an alignment of their IMNs. First, a survey was conducted to investigate the relationship between network capabilities and competitive capabilities. While competitive capabilities can be used to define the strategic emphasis of manufacturing strategy, network capabilities can be used to outline the strategic emphasis of IMNs. Understanding the linkages between both concepts helps to comprehend how IMNs can support manufacturing strategy better and to, thus, formulate well-informed strategies for IMNs. Second, a case study was conducted to investigate the linkage between centralization of decision-making of IMNs and network capabilities. The centralization of decision-making is a key issue characterizing the coordination of IMNs. The findings on the link between the two concepts help to understand better how the centralization of decision-making needs to be adjusted to promote specific network capabilities effectively. Third, a case study research strategy was followed to examine the relationship between network focus and network capabilities. Network focus is a key e.

This thesis sets out to investigate the relationship between competitive priorities and network capabilities in international manufacturing networks. Existing theory claims that aligning network capabilities to competitive priorities leads to higher business performance. In order to prove this alignment performance link, six hypotheses were developed. To test these, the data from a management survey with 88 participants was analysed for moderation. The survey asked manufacturing managers (COO, Head of Manufacturing, Head of Business Unit, etc.) to rate competitive priorities, network capabilities, and performance for their network. As there were previously no existing measurement tools for network capabilities, the development of a network capability scale is a significant first result of this thesis. However, a lack of correlation in the underlying data led to the suspension of the hypotheses, since competitive capabilities did not match competitive priorities. This suggests that management are not implementing the competitive priorities as theory dictates. Still, upon empirical evaluation of the collected data, it was established that company behaviour does not match the trade-off concepts of the existing manufacturing network theory. Companies simultaneously follow several network capabilities without any negative impact on performance. These findings indicate that from a general perspective, firms do not experience trade-off relationships between network capabilities.

The preceding process of globalization and the continuously rising competitive pressure on manufacturing companies in more developed economies unveiled the limits of classical site-focused optimization approaches. The focus of network optimization shifts ever more towards an integrative view of manufacturing networks, striving for a harmonization of the strategy-, configuration- and coordination levels. This book presents such an integrative approach to the strategic management of manufacturing networks. Besides strategic network requirements, this book discusses the derivation of an optimal global footprint and the optimization of network coordination activities. Special attention is paid to the site roles concept, especially to the concept of 'lead factory'. A large number of up-to-date cases from the producing industry enrich the book and provide the reader with vivid examples for the application of the presented concepts. Hence, this book is a must-read for both practitioners and academic researchers.

Using site-specific optimization approaches in international manufacturing networks is increasingly proving insufficient. To solve this problem, several holistic and integrated alternatives have been developed to reflect a global perspective. This book presents advances in the St. Gallen Global Manufacturing Network Model and its application in numerous industry-, benchmarking- and research projects. The contents combine data-driven solutions with qualitative management frameworks for the strategic optimization of international manufacturing networks. In the first part, the book addresses the foundation of manufacturing network management and further describes the St. Gallen Operational Excellence approaches to manage plant performance. On this basis, the authors show how plant- and network-level performance can be enhanced via key improvement domains (e.g., strategy, configuration, coordination, performance management, digitalization). In turn, the second part demonstrates the application of the constructs in manufacturing companies from various industries. By combining research and practice, the book offers unique perspectives on the management of global production striving toward higher performance on manufacturing site and network level.

Dispersed Manufacturing Networks provides new perspectives of dispersed manufacturing systems from three points of view. The first is that offered by complex systems theory, particularly on how agents in these industrial networks interact and how that provides possibility for coordination. The book also elaborates on issues of coordination and planning, as well as examining new solutions and challenges for logistics problems and collaboration in engineering networks within the internationalisation perspective. The impact of globalization is discussed for both managerial decision-making and operational performance of supply chains. A strong emphasis is placed on the need for continuous decision-making with recognition of the fact that networks of loosely connected agents require different approaches. Both researchers and professionals will welcome Dispersed Manufacturing Networks. It is an informative guide for those researching and working across a range of fields.

Innovation in Manufacturing Networks A fundamental concept of the emergent business, scientific and technological paradigms ces area, innovation the ability to apply new ideas to products, processes, organizational practices and business models - is crucial for the future competitiveness of organizations in a continually increasingly globalised, knowledge-intensive marketplace. Responsiveness, agility as well as the high performance of manufacturing systems is responsible for the recent changes in addition to the call for new approaches to achieve cost-effective responsiveness at all the levels of an enterprise. Moreover, creating appropriate frameworks for exploring the most effective synergies between human potential and automated systems represents an enormous challenge in terms of processes characterization, modelling, and the development of adequate support tools. The implementation and use of Automation Systems requires an ever increasing knowledge of enabling technologies and Business Practices. Moreover, the digital and networked world will surely trigger new business practices. In this context and in order to achieve the desired effective and efficiency performance levels, it is crucial to maintain a balance between both the technical aspects and the human and social aspects when developing and applying new innovations and innovative enabling technologies. BASYS conferences have been developed and organized so as to promote the development of balanced automation systems in an attempt to address the majority of the current open issues.
