Excerpt from The Albany Directory, for the Year 1864: Containing a General Directory of the Citizens, a Business Directory, a Record of the City Government, Its Institutions, &C., &C In all Directories, comprising as they do, vast numbers of names and figures, some errors and omis sions are invariably noticed, therefore we shall claim only that degree of accuracy and completeness which a competent and faithful corps of assistants, combined with a large experience in this business, are able to produce. That our patrons may have some data by which they may form an Opinion as to how faithful our duties have been performed this year, we give the following facts: The whole num ber of names in the Directory of last year was the number in this edition is showing an increase over last year of names. Many statisticians estimate the population of a city by adding three names to every one found in its Directory, such-nu estimate would show an increase of population during the past year of persons. We are, however, of the opinion, that this great addition of names found, is derived more from the thoroughness with which our work has been done, than from a great influx of people to the city; but, from whichever source they may have come.
