Excerpt from Tennyson, the Story of His Life The Life of a great man cannot be written in one, or even in many, biographies and it is only after the task has been frequently attempted that a measure of success is attainable. Not until we have become thoroughly acquainted with a man's outer life can we with confidence lift the veil, and, entering the inner sanctuary of his being, seek somewhat to understand the secrets of his soul, and learn how they dominate his thought and influence his work. Excerpt from Alfred Tennyson: A Saintly Life It seems then an obligation of honour in writing of Tennyson, to decline the gossip of curiosity or malignity, and to rest content with the facts which are revealed by a biographer who wholly loves the man whose life he writes, yet loves him with a discriminating love (tennyson: a Memoir, ii. Excerpt from Tennyson Accident of his hour, the call Of his age, which made Tennyson a philo sophic poet. He was naturally not only a pure lover of beauty, but a pure lover of beauty in a much more peculiar and distinguished sense even than a man like Keats, or a man like Robert Bridges. He gave us scenes Of Nature that cannot easily be surpassed, but he chose them like a landscape painter rather than like a religious poet. Above all, he exhibited his abstract love of the beautiful in one most personal and characteristic fact. He was never so successful or so triumphant as when he was describing not Nature, but art. He could describe a statue as Shelley could describe a cloud. He was at his very best in describing buildings, in their blending of aspiration and exactitude. He found to perfection the harmony between the rhythmic recurrences of poetry and the rhythmic recurrences Of architecture. His description, for example, Of the Palace of Art is a thing entirely Victorious and unique. The whole edifice, as. Excerpt from Life and Writings of Alfred Lord Tennyson Among our poets Alfred Lord Tennyson occupies a conspicuous place. From 1842 to 1892 he was the most well-known poet of England, and he had not, like many a poet, to wait till near the end of his life to receive his just reward of fame; for, from his thirty-third year onward, he continued to hold the position of representative poet of his country in the same way as Verdi was the representative master of music in Italy during the same period. The Laureateship bestowed upon him in 1850 was only the public recognition of the dominion he had already acquired among his countrymen. Such a career is a phenomenon in our literary history worthy of being considered from time to time, because the further Tennyson recedes from us the reasons of his supremacy will become more apparent. Excerpt from Alfred Lord Tennyson a Study of His Life and Work This volume was completed, all but the last page of biography, when the sudden illness of Lord Tennyson startled me at the task of minute revision, which I had hoped might long be my pleasant occupation. Such as it is, the book has been my companion during the last two years, and grew into shape as the natural result of a love for the poetry, and a desire to possess in convenient shape all that could be recorded of the life of one whom I regarded with sincere enthusiasm. In process of time, no doubt, a life of Lord Tennyson will be written, based upon material which at the present moment is in the possession of the family. The present volume does not pretend to be the official life of the late Poet Laureate, and expressly deprecates the supposition that it is built upon any but public data; nevertheless it will not be found to be altogether devoid of novelty. Perhaps I may claim to have searched more patiently and widely than any of my predecessors for every available record; and I certainly have left no important source of likely information untested. Excerpt from Tennyson: A Modern Portrait MY aim in this book has been to create a living portrait of a poet and a man as I have conceived him after a close study both of his life and his poetry and of their intimate reactions. For twenty years of middle life, the period contained in Part II. And some of Part III. Of this book, Tenny son's poetry supplies the more vital and explicit evidence. In youth and in later life it exists rather as the implicit habit of his life, from which, therefore, I have been careful not to disentangle it. Excerpt from Alfred Lord Tennyson: A Memoir None can truly write his single day, And none can write it for him upon earth. However he wished that, if I deemed it better, the incidents of his life should be given as shortly as might be without comment, but that my notes should be final and full enough to preclude the chance of further and unauthentic biographies. Excerpt from Tennyson's Life and Poetry: And Mistakes Concerning Tennyson There is already an extensive Tennyson literature. Of books relating to the scenes connected with his life and works, are Walters' In Tennyson Land; Brooks' Out of Doors with Tennyson; also Church's Laureate's Country, and Napier's Homes and Haunts of Lord Tennyson. There is a mass of material, both critical and biographical, in Shepherd's Tennysoniana; Wace's Life and Works of Tennyson; Tainsh's Study of the Works of Tennyson; Jennings' Sketch of Lord Tennyson; and Van Dyke's Poetry of Tennyson. Besides these may be mentioned Brightwell's Tennyson Concordance; Irving's Tennyson; Lester's Lord Tennyson and the Bible; also Collins' Illustrations of Tennyson. Valuable help for understanding and appreciating In Memoriam is afforded by the volumes on that poem written by Robertson, Gatty, Genung, Chapman and Davidson. Much interesting information is given in Dawson's Study of "The Princess"; Mann's Tennyson's "Maud" Vindicated; Elsdale's Studies in the Idyls; and Nutt's Studies on the Legend of the Holy Grail. A collection of Tennyson's songs, set to music by various composers, has been issued by Stanley Lucas and by Harper & Bros. Several volumes of selections from Tennyson's writings have appeared as follows: Ausgewahlte Gedichte, with notes (in German) by Fischer, Salzwedel, 1878; Lyrical Poems of Alfred Tennyson, with notes (in Italian) by T. C. Cann, Florence, 1887; Lyrical Poems of Lord Tennyson, annotated by F. T. Palgrave; Select Poems of Tennyson, and Young People's Tennyson, both edited by W. J. Rolfe; Tennyson Selections, with notes by F. J. Rowe and W. T. Webb; and Tennyson for the Young, edited by Alfred Ainger.
