This book examines the process of Biology teacher preparation in diploma colleges and universities in Kenya. Specifically, it interrogates the appropriateness and possibilities of implementing a quality Biology Teacher Education Programme. Dr. Momanyi establishes that preparation of Science teachers at diploma colleges is better owing to the positive attitudes of both trainees and trainers, high level of management support and allocation of appropriate resources and facilities towards teacher preparation. He observes that, on the contrary, most teacher trainees at degree level have a negative attitude towards teacher education and at the same time teacher training departments at university level are poorly equipped with necessary resources and facilities. The author advocates for equipping of teacher preparation departments with appropriate and adequate training resources and facilities. He recommends that teacher training programmes should, as much as possible, integrate subject content and pedagogy. The book is highly recommended for policy makers in the area of science education, university lecturers and prospective Science and Biology teachers.

Seminar paper from the year 2024 in the subject Didactics - Biolology, , language: English, abstract: This empirical study investigated the challenges associated with biology teaching and learning materials in selected schools in the Central Region of Ghana. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the classroom implementation of biology curriculum. A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used for the study. The target population comprised 187 biology teachers and 7790 second year biology students in all the 58 public senior high schools that offered elective biology during the 2016/2017 academic year. The accessible population however consisted of 4500 second year biology students drawn from 21 schools. The final sample comprised 106 biology teachers and 354 biology students. Factor analysis was used to perform inferential analysis and draw conclusions on the research questions. Resources for teaching and learning biology was inadequate in all schools visited. Most teachers did not organise practical activities regularly and this affected some profile dimensions suggested by the teaching curriculum. It is recommended that only qualified and experienced teachers should be employed to handle senior high school students in order to build a good and strong foundation for them. This paper intends to highlight on teaching and learning of biology in senior high schools in the central region of Ghana. The study area was chosen because of the rich history of education it has; Central Region is the cradle of education in Ghana. This paper tends to highlight on how teaching and learning with its’ resources in biology is carried out in most senior high schools.

The subject of appropriateness of the methods of teaching evolutionary concepts in Kenyan high schools and the ability of the current biology teachers to enable their students to achieve high performance in national examinations is increasingly capturing the attention of teachers, school managers, Researchers and policy makers in Kenya . The growing interest stems and reflects the increased National concern over the low level of students' performance in biology and more specifically in questions about evolution partially caused by inappropriate or poor teaching methods. The topic which is considered as one of the core foundations of biological studies is a challenge to most teachers because teaching it tends to attract complex socio- political responses from the learners whose religious and cultural backgrounds vary and have different impacts on their perceptions of critical evolutionary concepts like origin of life and theories that seem to lack scientific integrity upon which the teaching and learning of scientific concepts is expected to be based.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: With the rapid developments in science and technology, biology, which is one of the fundamental to many disciplines has becomes increasingly important. The number of compounds and their many different applications begs the question, how can we teach all the knowledge to students? To meet with the needs of society, reform in biology teaching has taken place all over the world. However, we cannot teach students everything in this rapidly developing world. Accordingly, most academics agree that we should just teach students how to learn and apply biology. It is also the case that if people want to keep up with the development of knowledge, they should keep studying and assessing all their lives. However because the reformat has concentrated on knowledge structures, our teaching methods are still teacher-centered, not student-centered and do not encourage students to achieve lifelong learning and assessment. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Teacher self-efficacy, interest, attitude, qualification, experience and pupils’ academic achievement in secondary school biology. The participants of the study comprises of 254 secondary school teachers and 120 secondary school students. Data collected on the study were analyzed using a stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results reveals that teacher self-efficacy and interest had significant correlation with students achievement scores. Teacher’s self-efficacy being the best predictor of students’ academic achievement in biology was followed by teacher’s interest. Attitude, qualification and experience were not significant correlation with pupil’s achievement in biology. The study recommended that it is high time for primary school biology teachers to have a change of attitude towards the teaching of the subject so that the achievement of universal basic education will not be hindered. Furthermore, primary school educational authorities were called upon to ensure that only teachers who are qualified to teach the subject are employed. Not these alone, their attention was also drawn to the fact that they should design educational programmes that will enhance the teacher self-efficacy for a better prediction of pupils’ achievement in Biology.
