Excerpt from Historical Tales and Legends: Of the Highlands These tales and legends were very favourably received by a Wide circle of readers, and by the Press generally, as they appeared from month to month in the Celtic Magazine. They are now pub lished in a collected form at the request of many who have previously perused them. I would like to present the. Public with the names of their authors; but as one of them - the Norman and Torquil of the Celtic Magazine - objects to have his name made public, although he has written the greater number of them, I must content myself now by taking advantage of this opportunity to thank him. Excerpt from Popular Tales of the West Highlands, Vol. 2: Orally Collected Before this there was a king, and he wished to see his son with a wife before she should depart. His son said he had better go for a wife; and he gave him half a hundred pounds to get her. He went forward in to a hostelry to stay in it. He went down to a chamber with a good fire in front of him; and when he had gotten meat, the man of the house went down to talk to him. He told the man of the house the journey on which he was. The man of the house told him he need not go further; that there was a little house opposite to his sleeping chamber; that the man of the house had three fine daughters; and if he would stand in the window of his chamber in the morning, that he would see one after another coming to dress herself. Excerpt from Legendary Tales of the Highlands, a Sequel, Vol. 1 of 3: To Highland Rambles Some person of education having come to the spot next morning, who had heard of such a thing having been found, was led by curiosity to examine it, when, to the astonishment of all who heard of it, the brazen frying-pan was discovered to be a lorica, or corselet of gold. The metal was found to be of about the same degree of purity as our present coin. It was so thin, that it weighed altogether no more than sixty sovereigns, and there fore it appears evident that it could not have been used as armour of defence in Combat. It is more than probable that it must have been worn merely as an orna mental piece of armour on occasions of state or parade, in which case it was, very likely, originally lined with leather. It was embossed all over it, of a simple pattern, but it was not perforated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stormcliff a Tale of the Highlands The will to attain the summit of the cliff was not impaired by the severe toil of his ascent. When his hat brushed from his head, and fell away into the yawning gulf beneath him, he smiled a bitter smile, then clung by one hand, and with the other swept back from his eyes the long hair, that he might better calculate his course; then higher and more carefully he climbed with unabated earnestness and will. He knew that no other human creature had ever attempted the mad feat. He knew also that the chances of his being able to descend again with his life, were the chances only which madmen take. But a storm was raging within him, which drowned fear, and reason, and prudence; and the ter rors of the ascent were to this storm as the zephyr to the tornado. Excerpt from Legendary Tales of the Highlands, a Sequel, Vol. 3 of 3: To Highland Rambles In the middle of the last century - with two lines of strange-looking thatched or sod-covered stables, byres, barns, and other out-houses, pro jecting from its sides at right angles to its front, with divers out-riders, and isolated strag gling edifices, of similar architecture and materials, dropped down here and there, as the hand of chance might have sown them - the smoke coming furth from some of their lumm heads, and partly also from their low door-ways, proving to you, almost against your conviction, that they actually are the dwelling-places of human beings - Fancy the whole grouped (as Mr. Grant, the long painter lad of Grantown, would have said) with sundry goodly rows of peat and turf stacks, a number of corn ricks wonderfully formed, and bulging and hanging out of the centre of gravity, each in a different direction, like a parcel of drunken Dutch dancers - in the midst of all a large midden - (query whether the word madden may not be a mere corruption of the words middle-izz, - tbe im'dden being always in tlw middle of all rural premises in Scotland?
