Photographing God is not a how-to book about photographic technique. It is a "what-to" and "why-to" photography study guide to accompany the only true reference book, the Bible for, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." (2 Timothy 3:16 New International Version) Written for those who want to work as a visual journalist or for those already working that want a bit of direction and inspiration, each chapter contains topical discussions backed up with Bible verses and photographs. Chapter 1, Visual Storytelling, discusses the importance of truth and believability in journalism and the dangers of altering images. "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15)Chapter 2, Finding your Focus, deals with the why-to's of visual journalism and examines the subjects of recognizing and using your "photography gifts", inspiration and motivation as well as self promotion and exploitation. "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms" (1 Peter 4:10)"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:17) Chapter 3, Seeing God, deals with the what-to's and discusses subject matter, finding God's image or essence and seeing it manifested in your photographs. "if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul." (Deuteronomy 4:29)Chapter 4, Only the News, deals with trusting that God has everything under control so it is possible to focus on the job at hand. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)And finally, Chapter 5, Sports, offers sports related scripture and images and advises to work without judgment and not be distracted by off-field personalities and controversies."Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs." (1 Corinthians 13:4-5)"Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character. Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God-I say this to your shame" (1 Corinthians 15:33-34)

For amateurs and professionals alike, this book is the story of photography's power to renew the spirit. Jan Phillips helps us transform sight into vision, leading us to see that images can be mirrors for our deepest truths, even in our simple snapshots. "The real thing about photography," Jan says, "is that it brings you home to yourself, connects you to what fulfills your deepest longings. Every step in the process is a step toward the light, an encounter with the God who is at eye level, whose image I see wherever I look. There's something holy about this work. Like the pilgrim's journey; it's heaven all the way."

It has been my pleasure writing this book, because countless people are still confused on this subject of God holding their confessed sins against them. Some have been told "God is going to get you! He is just waiting to zap you for one thing or another! Nothing could be farther from the truth. God is a loving and forgiving God (John 3:16). When you repent of and forsake your sins, he forgives, cleanses, and restores you (1 John 1:9). Although there is a reciprocity for sin--meaning, a consequence. This is just you reaping for what you have said or done. It is similiar to "For every action, there is a consequence, good or bad." After reading my book, I pray that you come away with a renewed sense of confidence on this subject, one that will help you to share with others your newfound understanding. You can tell them Pastor Edna Parker has written a book on this subject. It explains, according to the Holy Scriptures, that God does not take pictures.

These pictures were taken over a span of several years and many countless hours of trying to get the one shot that would capture the beauty that's all around us. It started when I bought my first digital camera to take on vacation. It quickly turned into seeing so much beauty that I always had my camera handy to get that perfect sunset, amazing cloud formation or wave crashing on the beach. I did this book by the grace of God. He supplied me with the money to make it happen and he had one of my best friends push me to publish my photos. I just didn't think it would happen, but when God wants you to do something, he doesn't let up until you listen. For me, taking pictures of God's creations has helped me feel closer to him and to see how blessed I am to have him in my life. I hope you sit and just really enjoy the book as much as I do and to really just see God's Beauty not only in this book but all around each day that you're going to work, driving the kids to school, or just running errands. You can find peace in what you see. Remember, God loves you, and there is nothing you can't do when you let go and let God! #BeABlessing #SmileAtStrangers #BeTheChange

In this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume, Richard Lints argues that "idol" language in the Bible is a conceptual inversion of the "image" language of Genesis 1. He shows how the narrative of human identity runs from creation to fall to redemption in Christ, and examines the recent renaissance of interest in idolatry with its conceptual power to explain the "culture of desire."
