When installing or servicing an air conditioning or refrigeration system, two of the most important tasks performed by technicians are refrigerant recovery and system evacuation. In order to perform these tasks properly, and in a safe manner, technicians need to understand the theory behind them, having a working knowledge of the equipment and tools used, and employ accepted industry best practices. This e-book walks through each step of both tasks, while covering safety, theory, and application. Also covered are leak detection methods and filter drier use. System Recovery and Evacuation was written by HVACR instructors for HVACR instructors to provide sound, relevant information in a single source. This e-book provides students and practicing technicians with the information and knowledge necessary to understand refrigerant recovery, system evacuation, leak detection, and filter driers. It is full of color illustrations and includes worksheets that provide students and practicing technicians with the information and knowledge necessary to accurately and safely install or service air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The end of the e-book contains fill-in-the-blank questions that review the content of the entire manual.

Technical instructor and HVAC expert Jerry Clemons completely covers both air-conditioning as well as heating systems, so you can save money repairing your own vehicle. Covered is a history of HVAC systems, airflow throughout the system, the principles of refrigerant, diagnosis of common faults in older systems, testing procedures, and finally repair and, in the case of air conditioning, recharging your system. Also included is proper evacuation and disposal of any residual refrigerant in the system. Components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators and heater cores, pressure switches and climate control electrics and switches are also covered. Finally, for people with older cars, converting from the no-longer-available R-12 to R134a is detailed. Automotive climate controls are a complex system and are difficult to repair without proper instruction. Whether you are trying to get your old classic back to its original form or are just looking to save on expensive repairs, author Jerry Clemons and this book provide the knowledge you will need to get your car back on the road and cruising in comfort.

TRB Special Report 294: The Role of Transit in Emergency Evacuation explores the roles that transit systems can play in accommodating the evacuation, egress, and ingress of people from and to critical locations in times of emergency. The report focuses on major incidents that could necessitate a partial to full evacuation of the central business district or other large portion of an urban area. According to the committee that produced the report, transit agencies could play a significant role in an emergency evacuation, particularly in transporting carless and special needs populations, but few urban areas have planned for a major disaster and evacuation that could involve multiple jurisdictions or multiple states in a region, or have focused on the role of transit and other public transportation providers in such an incident. The report offers recommendations for making transit a full partner in emergency evacuation plans and operations, while cautioning emergency managers, elected officials, and the general public to be realistic in their expectations, particularly in a no-notice incident that occurs during a peak service period.
