Excerpt from Sydney Smith In writing this Study of Sydney Smith, I have been working in a harvest-field where a succession of diligent gleaners had preceded me. As soon as Sydney Smith died, his widow began to accumulate material for her husband's biography. She did not live to see the work accomplished, but she enjoined in her will that some record of his life should be written. The duty was undertaken by his daughter, Saba Lady Holland, who in 1855 published A Memoir of the Reverend Sydney Smith. To this memoir was subjoined a volume of extracts from his letters, compiled by his friend and admirer, Mrs. Austin. For nearly thirty years Lady Holland's Memoir and Mrs. Austin's Selection of Letters together constituted the sole Biography of Sydney Smith, and they still remain of prime authority; but they are lamentably inaccurate in dates. Lord Houghton's slight but vivid monograph was published in 1873. In 1884 Mr. Stuart Reid produced A Sketch of the Life and Times of Sydney Smith, in which he supplemented the earlier narrative with some traditions derived from friends then living, and "painted the figure of Sydney Smith against the background of his times." Excerpt from The Wit and Wisdom of Sydney Smith: A Selection of the Most Memorable Passages in His Writings and Conversations The intention of the Editor of this volume has been to unite in a compendious form the most brilliant and instructive sentences in the writings of Sydney Smith. These extracts are purposely separated as much as possible from the context and connection in which they originally stood; and each passage is limited to the smallest compass which could convey with accuracy the detached thoughts of the writer. In this volume the gems are displayed without their setting - the pearls are unstrung. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Sketch of the Life and Times of the Rev. Sydney Smith Two or three minor corrections as to matters of fact, and the alteration of a few expressions, exhaust the changes which have been made in this volume. The author is grateful for the immediate and cordial recognition which his work has won from the reviewers, and - whilst conscious that the portraiture he has endeavoured to present is still incomplete - his pleasure is enhanced by the knowledge that the public have endorsed the literary verdict pronounced upon the book, by calling for the present edition within a month of its first appearance. I am heartily glad that all our disqualifying laws for religious opinions are abolished, and I see nothing in such measures but unmixed good and real increase of strength to our Establishment. Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Sydney Smith, Vol. 3 of 3 On the sixth of April, 1824, Mr. George Lamb (a gentleman who is always the advocate of whatever is honest and liberal) presented the following petition from several jurymen in the habit of serving on juries at the Old Bailey: - 'That your petitioners, fully sensible of the invaluable privilege of Jury trials, and desirous of seeing them as complete as human institutions will admit, feel it their duty to draw the attention of the House to the restrictions imposed on the prisoner's consel, which, they humbly conceive, have strong claims to a legislative remedy. With every disposition to decide justly, the petitioners have found, by experience, in the course of their attendances as jurymen in the Old Bailey, that the opening statements for the prosecution too frequently leave an impression more unfavourable to the prisoner at the bar, than the evidence of itself could have produced; and it has always sounded harsh to the petitioners to hear it announced from the bench, that the counsel, to whom the prisoner has committed his defence, cannot be permitted to address the jury in his behalf, nor reply to the charges which have, or have not, been substantiated by the witnesses. Excerpt from A Memoir of the Rev. Sydney Smith Such being the case, however, his talents, and the employment of them, are alone before the world. This is but half the picture and these very talents, and the use he has made of them, make me believe that few who have known so much do not wish to know more. The mode of life, the heart, the habits, the thoughts and feelings, the conversation, the home, the occupations of such a mam - all, in short, which can give life and reality to the picture, - are as yet wanting; and it is to endeavour to supply this want that I have ventured to undertake this task. It is always more difficult to write the life of a private than of a public man. There are many things likewise which make that of my father a peculiarly difficult one to delineate; and I should shrink from the task I have undertaken, from the fear of not doing it justice, had not death made such fearful havoc amongst his early contemporaries, and those best fitted to do justice to his memory and age, business, or health, placed insuperable obstacles in the way of all those abler pens which both my mother and I had once hoped might undertake it. I therefore, from these causes, and in accordance with my mother's most earnest desire, repeated in her will, that some record of his virtues should be written, venture to give to the public these recollections of my father, which I had previously been collecting for some years solely for myself and my children, together with numerous contributions from various friends. With these materials, illustrating the Selection of his letters, which my friend Mrs Austin has kindly undertaken to edit, I trust to lay before the public such a record of my father's character, as a son, a clergyman, a father, a husband, and a friend, as may be deemed by them not unworthy of the reputation he has already acquired for talent and honesty by his writings.
