Excerpt from Swartz and Tedrowe's Indianapolis City Directory, 1875: Ending March, 1876; Comprising a Complete Alphabetical List of All Business Firms and Private Citizens; A Classified Business Directory and City Guide The present Volume contains Thirty Thousand one Hundred and Forty Four names, showing an increase since our last issue of Four Thousand Nine Hundred and Four, and on the basis of three and one-half persons to a name, making the population of the city over One Hundred and Five Thousand, and showing an increase in the population of the city of over Twenty Thou sand persons. It is true there has been some territory annexed to the city since our former issue which will in some respects account for the increase, but the most part has been in the city proper. There was over two thousand new dwelling houses erected in 1874, and today there is no more vacant houses in the city than there was one year ago, and this is among one of the greatest inducements that we can offer to manufacturers and business men to locate here. Coal, wood, stone of the best material abound in the State, and are within easy distance of the city, and as great railroad facilities for the transportation of the same as any in the world, and a good market for produce of all kinds. The classified Business Directory will be found a great help to those seeking the different pursuits of business.
