This book covers both standard and advanced topics of structural mechanics. Standard subjects covered include geometric stability, forces and displacements of statically determinate structures, force and displacement method, and influence lines. Advanced topics include matrix displacement method, dynamics of structures, and limit loading. The book serves both as a classroom textbook and as a permanent engineering reference. It is written in such a way that it can be followed by anyone with a basic knowledge of classical and material mechanics.

This second edition of Structural Mechanics is an expanded and revised successor to the highly successful first edition, which over the last ten years has become a widely adopted standard first year text. The addition of five new programmes, together with some updating of the original text, now means that this book covers most of the principles of structural mechanics taught in the first and second years of civil engineering degree courses. - Suitable for independent study or as a compliment to a traditional lecture-based course - Adopts a programmed learning format, with a focus on student-centred learning - Contains many examples, carefully constructed questions and graded practical problems, allowing the reader to work at their own pace, and assess their progress whilst gaining confidence in their ability to apply the principles of Structural Mechanics - Now covering the major part of the Structural Mechanics/Analysis syllabuses of most Civil Engineering degree courses up to second year level.

In the recent decades, computational procedures have been applied to an increasing extent in engineering and the physical sciences. Mostly, two separate fields have been considered, namely, the analysis of solids and structures and the analysis of fluid flows. These continuous advances in analyses are of much interest to physicists, mathematicians and in particular, engineers. Also, computational fluid and solid mechanics are no longer treated as entirely separate fields of applications, but instead, coupled fluid and solid analysis is being pursued. The objective of the Book Series is to publish monographs, textbooks, and proceedings of conferences of archival value, on any subject of computational fluid dynamics, computational solid and structural mechanics, and computational multi-physics dynamics. The publications are written by and for physicists, mathematicians and engineers and are to emphasize the modeling, analysis and solution of problems in engineering.

Structural Theorems and Their Applications is an account of the various structural theorems and their applications. Topics covered range from the principles of superposition to virtual work and energy concepts, calculation of deflections, and analysis of indeterminate structures using the compatibility and equilibrium methods. Reciprocal theorems and theorems of plastic analysis for plane frames are also discussed. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of the problems of structural analysis and the importance of the principle of virtual work in this regard, followed by an analysis of the principles of superposition. The next chapter is devoted to virtual work and energy concepts such as strain energy and complementary energy. The principle of virtual work is used in the subsequent chapters as the basis for all of the indirect methods of structural analysis described in the text, including the analysis of indeterminate structures using the compatibility method and the equilibrium method. The principle of virtual work is also used to prove the reciprocal theorems and to establish the various theorems of plastic and incremental collapse for framed structures. This monograph will be of interest to mechanical and structural engineers.

This class-room tested book, representing the teaching experience of over two decades by the authors, is designed to cater to the needs of senior undergraduate and first-year postgraduate students of civil engineering for a course in Advanced Structural Analysis/Matrix Methods of Structural Analysis/Computer Methods of Structural Analysis. The book endeavours to fulfil two principal objectives. First, it acquaints students with the matrix methods of structural analysis and their underlying concepts and principles. Second, it demonstrates the development of well-structured computer programs for the analysis of structures by the matrix methods. After a thorough presentation of the mathematical tools and theory required for linear elastic analysis of structural systems, the text focuses on the flexibility and stiffness methods of analysis for computer usage. The direct stiffness method which forms the backbone of most computer programs is also discussed. Besides, the physical behaviour of structures is analyzed throughout with the help of axial thrust, shear force, bending moment and deflected shape diagrams. A large number of worked-out examples are included to amplify the concepts and to illustrate the effect of external loads, including the effect of temperature, lack of fit, and settlement of supports, etc. The CD-ROM contains many illustrative computer programs and the usage of modern packages such as Excel and Matlab. The book will also be a useful reference for practising structural engineers who wish to pursue the versatility of matrix methods as a tool for computer applications.

Structural Mechanics Fundamentals gives you a complete and uniform treatment of the most fundamental and essential topics in structural mechanics. Presenting a traditional subject in an updated and modernized way, it merges classical topics with ones that have taken shape in more recent times, such as duality. This book is extensively based on the introductory chapters to the author’s Structural Mechanics: A Unified Approach. Coverage includes: The basic topics of geometry of areas and of kinematics and statics of rigid body systems The mechanics of linear elastic solids—beams, plates, and three-dimensional solids—examined using a matrix approach The analysis of strain and stress around a material point The linear elastic constitutive law, with related Clapeyron’s and Betti’s theorems Kinematic, static, and constitutive equations The implication of the principle of virtual work The Saint Venant problem The theory of beam systems—statically determinate or indeterminate Methods of forces and energy for the examination of indeterminate beam systems The book draws on the author’s many years of teaching experience and features a wealth of illustrations and worked examples to help explain the topics clearly yet rigorously. The book can be used as a text for senior undergraduate or graduate students in structural engineering or architecture and as a valuable reference for researchers and practicing engineers.
