Chinese Internal Medicine is an international collaboration of Chinese medicine experts from both China and the West, covering the theory and practice of Chinese Internal Medicine in greater depth than any English language textbook available today. The material in this text comprises course material for a professional course of training in TCM, also being the basic material for studying and comprehension of other more advanced courses in TCM. The scope of the material contained in this textbook is approximately equal to that for students of TCM colleges in China, and coincides with the requirements in the Examination Syllabus for TCM Professional Practitioners Worldwide. Individual chapters contain forty nine common conditions as well as annexes or associated pathologies. Each chapter is composed of an overview of the pathology, causative factors, pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, pattern identification and treatment, a summary, a case study, prevention and life-style recommendations and acupuncture treatments for each category of disease. An abundance of classical references are also included here.

"This book was first published in Taiwan to teach Chinese medical English to Chinese students. The present U.S. edition provides English-speaking students a useful introduction to the concepts of Chinese medicine and to the English terminology described in greater detail in A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine (Paradigm Publications, 1998). It is particularly suitable for those beginning to learn Chinese medicine after having studied Chinese, and for those who wish to master the English terminology for the purposes of translation.Over 800 commonly used Chinese terms are organized in thematic order. Each English term is followed by the corresponding Chinese term in simplified and complex characters, as well as Pinyin transcription. The pronunciation of the English term is given in Kenyon & Knott transcription for the benefit of non-English speakers. The definitions and clinical significance of terms are written entirely in English. At the end of each chapter, there are exercises which not only provide activities for students to do in class or at home, but also furnish teachers with examples for examination questions.Three appendixes contain answers to the quizzes, present the most important characters (with examples of their usage), and teach Taiwanese students the PRC Pinyin system." -Publisher.

Do the portrayals of objects in literary texts represent historical evidence about the material culture of the past? Or are things in books more than things in the world? Sophie Volpp considers fictional objects of the late Ming and Qing that defy being read as illustrative of historical things. Instead, she argues, fictional objects are often signs of fictionality themselves, calling attention to the nature of the relationship between literature and materiality. Volpp examines a series of objects—a robe, a box and a shell, a telescope, a plate-glass mirror, and a painting—drawn from the canonical works frequently mined for information about late imperial material culture, including the novels The Plum in the Golden Vase and The Story of the Stone as well as the short fiction of Feng Menglong, Ling Mengchu, and Li Yu. She argues that although fictional objects invite readers to think of them as illustrative, in fact, inconsistent and discontinuous representation disconnects the literary object from potential historical analogues. The historical resonances of literary objects illuminate the rhetorical strategies of individual works of fiction and, more broadly, conceptions of fictionality in the Ming and Qing. Rather than offering a transparent lens on the past, fictional objects train the reader to be aware of the fallibility of perception. A deeply insightful analysis of late Ming and Qing texts and reading practices, The Substance of Fiction has important implications for Chinese literary studies, history, and art history, as well as the material turn in the humanities.

This volume examines the current state of knowledge concerning the influence of a hot environment on nutrient requirements of military personnel. A parallel concern is ensuring that performance does not decline as a result of inadequate nutrition. The committee provides a thorough review of the literature in this area and interprets the diverse data in terms of military applications. In addition to a focus on specific nutrient needs in hot climates, the committee considers factors that might change food intake patterns and therefore overall calories. Although concern for adequate nutrition for U.S. soldiers in Saudi Arabia prompted the initiation of this project, its scope includes the nutrient needs of individuals who may be actively working in both hot-dry and hot-moist climates.
