The issue of student deviance has been a problem in the Kenyan educational system since the first case of student unrest was reported at the beginning of the 20th century. However, violence where human lives have been lost and a mass of property destroyed have characterized recent cases of student unrest in secondary schools in Kenya. The main concern is why student protests are turning violent day after day. This is worrying the major stakeholders given the mass of resources invested in the educational system. In the last couple of years, the Kenyan Government outlawed corporal punishment in schools and this has been seen as aggravating student violence especially in secondary schools. This book has six chapters. There is the introduction, review of relevant literature, and the discussion of methodology. There is also data presentation, data analysis and interpretation, and finally, the summary and conclusions. The book is intended for all those who hold stake in secondary schools, school administrators, student-teacher trainees and students of Sociology at university level, and anybody with interest in teenage and/or youth issues in general. Enjoy reading this great book.

Shorttitle: Violent behaviour has become a concern in the Kenyan educational system. It is manifested in the form of rioting, sexual violence and bullying. This contributes to physical disability and poor academic performance in schools. In Western Province, cases of student violence in secondary schools have been reported in the recent years. For instance, in 2008, eight cases were reported, whereas in 2009 the number rose to over 30 cases. The purpose of the study was to establish teachers' and students' perceptions of factors contributing to violent behavior among public secondary school students in Western Province, Kenya. Objectives of the study were to: establish teachers' and students' perceptions of forms of violence; and identify home, psychological, school and physiological factors contributing to violent behaviour. The study was based on the Social learning theory by Albert Bandura. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. Burning Ambition explores how young people learn to understand and influence the workings of power and justice in their society. Since 2008, hundreds of secondary schools across Kenya have been targeted with fire by their students. Through an in-depth study of Kenyan secondary students’ use of arson, Elizabeth Cooper asks why. With insightful ethnographic analysis, she shows that these young students deploy arson as moral punishment for perceived injustices and arson proves an effective tactic in their politics from below. Drawing from years of research and a rich array of sources, Cooper accounts for how school fires stoke a national conversation about the limited means for ordinary Kenyans, and especially youth, to peacefully influence the governance of their own lives. Further, Cooper argues that Kenyan students’ actions challenge the existing complacency with the globalized agenda of “education for all,” demonstrating that submissive despondency is not the only possible response to the failed promises of education to transform material and social inequalities.

Students' violence recurs very often in Kenyan schools. Attempts to curb it do not seem to have succeeded. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing recurrence of violence in public secondary schools. The objectives of the study were: to determine the influence of peer pressure, drug abuse, school administration and gender differences on recurrence of violence.Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the findings were presented in frequency tables, histograms, bar graphs and pie charts. The study established that school administration was contributing to recurrence of violence in public secondary schools. Headteachers' poor communication strategies were found to be able to bring confusion, misunderstandings, and indecency among students hence contributing to recurrence of violence. Boys were found to be more rebellious than girls. Therefore, boys were more likely to initiate violence in schools. The researcher concluded that poor school management contributed more to recurrence of violence than other factors because poor communication strategies, drug abuse and peer pressure were factors that could be contained by the school management.

This paper is a provocative reflection of three examples of adolescent male student violence using a masculinity lens. It is rooted in concrete situations and sets out to make masculinity visible in interpreting student violence. An attempt will thus be made to develop further understanding between masculinity and violence and in so doing show that student violence in Kenya is a gendered and power bound process. In a sense, I will show that an oppressive school administration system is not only self-destructive but also vulnerable to what can be termed as the masculinities of the oppressed. The paper has used an adventurous multi-disciplinary approach and benefited from a lively gender theoretical framework. The paper is not a finished position, but rather a springboard for radical dialogue on masculinity and adolescent male student violence, and hopefully it will be taken this way.

This volume describes how children’s experience with violence may affect and endanger their education, as well as their physical safety and their general well-being. It includes all forms of physical , psychological and sexual abuse, and neglect against children at home, at school, and in public spaces in two different areas of Kenya (rural and urban), while taking into account its environmental and cultural factors. This volume is unique, not only because of its focus on a less researched yet highly acute social problem but also because it provides inside knowledge by giving the children a voice through their direct participation in the data collection.
