Structural Theorems and Their Applications is an account of the various structural theorems and their applications. Topics covered range from the principles of superposition to virtual work and energy concepts, calculation of deflections, and analysis of indeterminate structures using the compatibility and equilibrium methods. Reciprocal theorems and theorems of plastic analysis for plane frames are also discussed. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of the problems of structural analysis and the importance of the principle of virtual work in this regard, followed by an analysis of the principles of superposition. The next chapter is devoted to virtual work and energy concepts such as strain energy and complementary energy. The principle of virtual work is used in the subsequent chapters as the basis for all of the indirect methods of structural analysis described in the text, including the analysis of indeterminate structures using the compatibility method and the equilibrium method. The principle of virtual work is also used to prove the reciprocal theorems and to establish the various theorems of plastic and incremental collapse for framed structures. This monograph will be of interest to mechanical and structural engineers.

This volume is the first to give the mathematical background and a comprehensive survey of the old and new summation formulae resulting in an approximate value of the critical load factor of a complex problem by means of the critical load factors of subproblems by addition. The theorems and formulae are richly illustrated by examples in structural engineering.

Ten years after the publication of the first English edition of The History of the Theory of Structures, Dr. Kurrer now gives us a much enlarged second edition with a new subtitle: Searching for Equilibrium. The author invites the reader to take part in a journey through time to explore the equilibrium of structures. That journey starts with the emergence of the statics and strength of materials of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo, and reaches its first climax with Coulomb's structural theories for beams, earth pressure and arches in the late 18th century. Over the next 100 years, Navier, Culmann, Maxwell, Rankine, Mohr, Castigliano and Müller-Breslau moulded theory of structures into a fundamental engineering science discipline that - in the form of modern structural mechanics - played a key role in creating the design languages of the steel, reinforced concrete, aircraft, automotive and shipbuilding industries in the 20th century. In his portrayal, the author places the emphasis on the formation and development of modern numerical engineering methods such as FEM and describes their integration into the discipline of computational mechanics. Brief insights into customary methods of calculation backed up by historical facts help the reader to understand the history of structural mechanics and earth pressure theory from the point of view of modern engineering practice. This approach also makes a vital contribution to the teaching of engineers. Dr. Kurrer manages to give us a real feel for the different approaches of the players involved through their engineering science profiles and personalities, thus creating awareness for the social context. The 260 brief biographies convey the subjective aspect of theory of structures and structural mechanics from the early years of the modern era to the present day. Civil and structural engineers and architects are well represented, but there are also biographies of mathematicians, physicists, mechanical engineers and aircraft and ship designers. The main works of these protagonists of theory of structures are reviewed and listed at the end of each biography. Besides the acknowledged figures in theory of structures such as Coulomb, Culmann, Maxwell, Mohr, Müller-Breslau, Navier, Rankine, Saint-Venant, Timoshenko and Westergaard, the reader is also introduced to G. Green, A. N. Krylov, G. Li, A. J. S. Pippard, W. Prager, H. A. Schade, A. W. Skempton, C. A. Truesdell, J. A. L. Waddell and H. Wagner. The pioneers of the modern movement in theory of structures, J. H. Argyris, R. W. Clough, T. v. Kármán, M. J. Turner and O. C. Zienkiewicz, are also given extensive biographical treatment. A huge bibliography of about 4,500 works rounds off the book. New content in the second edition deals with earth pressure theory, ultimate load method, an analysis of historical textbooks, steel bridges, lightweight construction, theory of plates and shells, Green's function, computational statics, FEM, computer-assisted graphical analysis and historical engineering science. The number of pages now exceeds 1,200 - an increase of 50% over the first English edition. This book is the first all-embracing historical account of theory of structures from the 16th century to the present day.

This second edition of Structural Mechanics is an expanded and revised successor to the highly successful first edition, which over the last ten years has become a widely adopted standard first year text. The addition of five new programmes, together with some updating of the original text, now means that this book covers most of the principles of structural mechanics taught in the first and second years of civil engineering degree courses. - Suitable for independent study or as a compliment to a traditional lecture-based course - Adopts a programmed learning format, with a focus on student-centred learning - Contains many examples, carefully constructed questions and graded practical problems, allowing the reader to work at their own pace, and assess their progress whilst gaining confidence in their ability to apply the principles of Structural Mechanics - Now covering the major part of the Structural Mechanics/Analysis syllabuses of most Civil Engineering degree courses up to second year level.

This book brings together recent advances in tensor analysis and studies of its invariants such as twistors, spinors, kinematic tensors and others belonging to tensor algebras with extended structures to Lie algebras, Kac-Moody algebras, and enveloping algebras, among others. Chapters cover such topics as classical tensors and bilinear forms, tensors for exploring space–time, tensor applications in geometry and continuum media, and advanced topics in tensor analysis such as invariant theory, derived categories, hypercohomologies, k-modules, extensions of kinematic tensors, infinite dimensional operators, and more.

This two-volume graduate textbook gives a comprehensive, state-of-the-art account of describing large subgroups of the unit group of the integral group ring of a finite group and, more generally, of the unit group of an order in a finite dimensional semisimple rational algebra. Since the book is addressed to graduate students as well as young researchers, all required background on these diverse areas, both old and new, is included. Supporting problems illustrate the results and complete some of the proofs. Volume 1 contains all the details on describing generic constructions of units and the subgroup they generate. Volume 2 mainly is about structure theorems and geometric methods. Without being encyclopaedic, all main results and techniques used to achieve these results are included. Basic courses in group theory, ring theory and field theory are assumed as background.

Although This Book Is Intended As A Sequel To Foundations Of Discrete Mathematics By The Same Author, It Can Be Read Independently Of The Latter, As The Relevant Background Needed Has Been Reviewed In Chapter 1. The Subsequent Chapters Deal With Graph Theory (With Applications), Analysis Of Algorithms (With A Detailed Study Of A Few Sorting Algorithms And A Discussion Of Tractability), Linear Programming (With Applications, Variations, Karmarkars Polynomial Time Algorithm, Integer And Quadratic Programming), Applications Of Algebra (To Polyas Theory Of Counting, Galois Theory, Coding Theory Of Designs). A Chapter On Matroids Familiarises The Reader With This Relatively New Branch Of Discrete Mathematics.Even Though Some Of The Topics Are Relatively Advanced, An Attempt Has Been Made To Keep The Style Elementary, So That A Sincere Student Can Read The Book On His Own. A Large Number Of Comments, Exercises, And References Is Included To Broaden The Readers Scope Of Vision. A Detailed Index Is Provided For Easy Reference.
