Excerpt from Stories of the Railway It was a minute past the time when the "through" night express should start, but still the ponderous engine stood motionless, the steam escaping with a terrific roar, and mounting high in the air, first in a vigorous jet, and then spreading in dull, whitened clouds that soon mingled with and were lost in the denser mass and greater volume of the rolling smoke. Excerpt from Tales of an Engineer: With Rhymes of the Rail Chicago by the Flyer. It was fifteen minutes before leaving time. At they were all aboard. A little ahead of my turn, I showed the gate-keeper an order Signed by the Super intendent of Motive Power, which gave the engineer authority to carry me on the locomo tive, and passed to the train. I found a little wiry engineer standing right in under the boiler of the 898, oiling her link motion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Stories of the Railroad IN the summer, fall, and early winter of 1863, I was tossing chips into an old Hinkley insider up in New England, for an engineer by the name of James Dillon. Dillon was considered as good a man as there was on the road: careful, yet fearless, kindhearted, yet impulsive, a man whose friends would fight for him and whose enemies hated him right royally. Excerpt from The Railway Conquest of the World There is the unfathomable fascination of romance connected with the construction of great railways, though little is known of the beginning and the growth of the great trunk roads of the world; of the heavy tax which their construction imposed upon the ingenuity, skill and resource of their builders. Speeding along swiftly in a luxurious Pullman car over a road-bed as smooth as an asphalt pavement conveys no impression of the perils and dangers faced or of the infinite labour expended in the making of that steel highway. To-day the earth is girdled with some 700,000 miles of railways, and there are few countries in which the locomotive has not made its appearance. This volume has been written with the express purpose of telling in a popular manner this story of romance. It is obviously impossible to deal with every great railway undertaking in the compass of a single volume; but those described may safely be considered representative, and they are the largest and most interesting enterprises between the two poles. In the writing of this volume I have been assisted by innumerable friends who have been identified closely with the introduction of Stephenson's invention into fresh fields of conquest. Excerpt from The Nerve of Foley, and Other Railroad Stories Felix Kennedy on the Flyer. The fast runs require young men. If you will no tice, you will rarely see an Old engineer on a fast passenger run; even a young man can stand only a few years of that kind of work. High speed on a locomotive is a question of nerve and endurance - to put it bluntly, a question of flesh and blood. You don't think much of this strike, do you, Mr. Reed? Said Andy to me one night. Excerpt from Wonders and Curiosities of the Railway: Or Stories of the Locomotive in Every Land Although, in the preparation of the following work I have drawn upon the entire literature of the railway during the half-century of its existence, and am therefore under obligation for materials to innumerable books, magazines, and newspapers, I must yet acknowledge especial indebtedness to the "Railway Age," of Chicago; to files of the London "Times," and certain early American newspapers kindly placed at my disposal by the librarian of the Boston Athenaeum, Mr. Charles A. Cutter; and to Mr. William H. Brown's "History of the First Locomotives in America." Mr. Brown's book is standard authority on the subject of early American railroads, although it has been for some time out of print, and is unfitted for the general reader by reason of its technical details. The chapter on "The Vertical Railway," in the present volume, was originally contributed by me to "Harper's Monthly Magazine"; and for permission to use it here, with the accompanying illustrations, I am indebted to the courtesy of Messrs. Harper & Brothers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Ways of Our Railways Both in the design and execution of the book I have received constant advice and assistance from Mr. C. E. Grasemann, to whom I tender my warmest acknowledgments. A portion of Chapter III was written, at my request, by Mr. Edward Davy Pain, and a portion of Chapter IV bv Mr. C. J. Bowen Cooke, to both of whom my Sincere thanks are offered for giving me the benefit of their literary Skill as well as of their expert knowledge. In writing each one of the other chapters I have had the assistance of one or more friends closely in touch with the department of railway working under treatment. My gratitude to these for help, in every case most kindly and willingly given, is none the less Sincere because I do not mention them by name. Excerpt from The Railway Children They were not railway children to begin with. I don't suppose they had ever thought about rail ways except as means of getting to Maskelyne and Cooke's, the Pantomime, Zoological Gardens, and Madame Tussaud's. They were just ordinary suburban children, and they lived with their Father and Mother in an ordinary red-brick-fronted villa, with coloured glass in the front door, a tiled pas sage that was called a hall, a bath-room with hot and cold water, electric bells, French windows, and a good deal of white paint, and every mod ern convenience, as the house-agents say. There were three of them. Roberta was the eldest. Of course, Mothers never have favourites, but if their Mother had had a favourite, it might have been Roberta. Next came Peter, who wished to be an Engineer when he grew up; and the youngest was Phyllis, who meant extremely well. Mother did not Spend all her time in paying dull calls to dull ladies, and sitting dully at home waiting for dull ladies to pay calls to her. She was almost always there, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them to do their home-lessons. Besides this she used to write stories for them while they were at school, and read them aloud after tea, and she always made up funny pieces of poetry for their birthdays and for other great occasions, such as the christening of the new kittens, or the refurnishing of the doll's house, or the time when they were getting over the mumps. Excerpt from The Romance of Modern Railways Flying and flying machines, however, have not and cannot have so many interesting features as are to be found upon engines and trains, with the result that the interest has swung back to the railway, and most boys of to-day are as keen about them as ever their fathers were. It is for such boys that this book is intended more than anyone else, but it is hoped, nevertheless, that it may make an even wider appeal. The writer knows an uncle who regularly buys a certain boys' periodical. He buys it, of course, to give to his nephew, but his friends notice that he always reads it through him self first, and, although this book may be intended for the sons and nephews, it is quite possible that some fathers and uncles may find it to their liking. The writing of it has been a labour of love, and if all readers get the same pleasure in reading it which the writer got in writing it, it is going to add largely to the sum of human happiness.
