Learn how to bring the power of stillness into your running practice with meditations, guidance, and inspiration from a long-time runner and Zen practitioner. Running is more than just exercise. Running is a practice, a moving meditation, that brings the power of stillness to all the activities in our lives. Vanessa Zuisei Goddard combines her experience leading running retreats with her two-decade practice of Zen to offer insight, humor, and practical guidance for grounding our running, or any physical practice, in meditation. When we see running solely as exercise and focus on improving our times, covering a certain number of miles, or losing weight, we miss the deeper implications of this art. Whether you are a new or experienced runner, you will learn how to be more embodied through thirteen running practices to help improve your focus and running form. Using mantras and visualizations, as well as a range of other exercises, Goddard offers ways to practice running as a moving meditation with an eye toward bringing the power of stillness to all the activities in your life. Ultimately, Still Running is a book about freedom, ease, and the joy of movement; it's about the power of stillness and learning how to use that power to live wholeheartedly.

Still Running combines the authors love for running with his greater love for God into an incredible story, intended as an encouragement for the reader to run his or her own race in life. This true story is about an African orphan who experienced death at an early age when his mother suddenly died from a two-day illness. Without an adult guardian, he put himself through school and eventually matriculates across the Atlantic, where he becomes a crusader against poverty. Incorporating sport metaphors to teach lifes lessons, the book is in part an autobiography and an inspirational manual. Its main takeaway is the role of divine intervention versus personal resilience in human pliancy. This book is a tribute to the millions of African children whose childhoods are mired in unimaginable poverty: At least fifty percent of its proceeds go to support the Liberian Education Initiative: African School of the Future (LEI), a proposed model K--12 education environment focused on college preparatory education, sustainable development, and servant leadership.

Seven days after Nate Northington was born, in October 1947, the NAACP made an appeal to the world on racism before the United Nations. As Nate grew up within an ever-changing and often volatile world plagued by bigotry and hatred, even he could not have predicted what would happen twenty years later. Destined to play football from an early age, Nate matured into a talented player whose good grades and competitive spirit quickly caught the eye of college recruiters. As he chronicles his journey from high school to his experience as the first black to sign an athletic scholarship at the University of Kentucky, Nate shares a glimpse into how he and other African American football players fought on the gridiron throughout the civil rights movement to achieve success both on and off the field. Every moment would lead up to the crucial period in American sports history when, after the sudden death of Greg PageNates close friend and teammatehe would break through the barriers of racism and become the first black to play football in the SEC. Still Running is a story not only about the game of football and integration but also about one man who was inspired to keep running, find grace through Gods love, and ultimately become a sports pioneer.

In June 1964, a twelve-year old child was summonsed to appear at Dublins Children's Court. The offence for which he was charged related to an amateurish break-in when coerced and accompanied by older children. In terms of gravity the misbehaviour was hardly more than a prank. In the severe surroundings of that oak panelled court, deep in the bowels of Dublin Castle, Mickey was sentenced to serve Three years hard labour in what was then known as an industrial school. Letterfrack Industrial School to which he was sent is situated in Connemara, one of Irelands most isolated regions. For a child its remoteness found its equal only in a Siberian gulag; the likelihood of escape less than that from San Franciscos notorious Alcatraz Prison. Its seclusion in this malevolent place of correction was a major factor in the institutionalised abuse of children by the Christian Brothers with whom these unfortunate waifs were placed Many of these ill-fated youngsters had not been convicted of any offence; their crime was that they were orphaned; most if not all were victims of dysfunctional family life. During his sentence Mickey, and the hundreds of other children who passed through this den of depravity, were methodically physically and mentally tortured and abused. The Irish State was instrumental in providing this depraved band of brothers with a steady supply of victims. With Taliban-like zeal the Christian Brothers methodically administered random life threatening beatings merely on a whim; the more injurious were witnessed by fellow brothers and many witnessed by other terrified children.

In one of his most ambitious physical efforts to date, Dean Karnazes attempted to run 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 days to raise awareness of youth obesity and urge Americans of all fitness levels to "take that next step." "UltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons - 50 States - 50 Days", a Journeyfilm documentary, follows Dean’s incredible step-by-step journey across the country. Ultrarunning legend Dean Karnazes has run 262 miles-the equivalent of ten marathons-without rest. He has run over mountains, across Death Valley, and to the South Pole-and is probably the first person to eat an entire pizza while running. With an insight, candor, and humor rarely seen in sports memoirs (and written without the aid of a ghostwriter or cowriter), Ultramarathon Man has inspired tens of thousands of people-nonrunners and runners alike-to push themselves beyond their comfort zones and be reminded of "what it feels like to be truly alive," says Sam Fussell, author of Muscle. Ultramarathon Man answers the questions Karnazes is continually asked: - Why do you do it? - How do you do it? - Are you insane? And in the new paperback edition, Karnazes answers the two questions he was most asked on his book tour: - What, exactly, do you eat? - How do you train to stay in such good shape?
