TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 358: Statewide Travel Forecasting Models examines statewide travel forecasting models designed to address planning needs and provide forecasts for statewide transportation, including passenger vehicle and freight movements. The report explores the types and purposes of models being used, integration of state and urban models, data requirements, computer needs, resources (including time, funding, training, and staff), limitations, and overall benefits. The report includes five case studies, two that focus on passenger components, two on freight components, and one on both passenger and freight.

This volume constitutes the record of a conference on urban travel demand forecasting held December 3-7, 1972 at Williamsburg, Virginia. Resource papers, prepared prior to the conference, served as a starting point and catalyst for six workshop sessions. The workshops viewed travel forecasting and its present deficiencies from the perspectives of the transportation options being evaluated, the broad range of social, economic, and environmental impacts that depend on traffic volumes and traffic operating conditions, and the requirements and opportunities for travel forecasting that result from considering how people make travel choices. Several speakers discussed what decision-makers want from the planning process in general and the forecasting procedure in particular and where they think deficiencies currently exist. In addition two state-of-the-art papers where presented.
