As a result, millions of apple trees have been removed and others have been neglected. From 1910 to 1925 the number of apple trees in the United States decreased nearly 40 per cent, but production has been practically maintained, according to the apple survey of the Bureau. A marked tendency toward the concentration of commercial apple orchards in the more favorable sections? And a gradual elimination of unprofitable orchards are reported. S. Department of Agriculture; In 1929 Switzerland imported these products from the United States to a total value of This trade, largely because of increased import restrictions by Switzer; land, had declined to only in 1934. The department says that with gradual improvement in world eco nomic conditions and particularly with improvement in Switzerland, our agricultural exports to Switzerland may be expected to climb toward the 1929 level. Secretary Wallace points out that Switzerland has retaliated strongly against agricultural imports from the United States because of increases in duties on Swiss products in the smoot-hawley tariff. The project began November 1 last and has for its purpose the increasing of poultry profits, being designed to aid producers in improving management methods and to demonstrate the effect of such improvements on flock incomes. Ap proximately l6,000 birds are included in the 75 flocks. Detailed records are being kept by each producer, including egg pro duction, sales of eggs and poultry, value of products consumed, losses and feed cost. Reports are submitted monthly to county agents, and a complete summary of all the records is prepared by. The college. Excerpt from State and Federal Marketing Activities and Other Economic Work, Vol. 11: July 1, 1931 Advantages and disadvantages of (the combine over the binder - thresher method of harvesting grain are analyzed in a new bulletin, Cost of Combine Harvesting in Minnesota, by Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. The study is based on daily records kept by combine Operators. The principal advantages of the combine over the binder - thresher method of harvest, according to the bulletin, are saving of man labor, reduction of total cost, speeding up the harvesting operations; and on grain farms, the Spreading of the straw on the land. The principal disadvantages are the difficulty of reducing the moisture content of the grain sufficiently for safe storage, and the loss of the straw.
