The development of Quantitative Feedback theory (QFT), a robust control system design method introduced by Horowitz, has been shown to be advantageous in many cases on multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) system design. The method incorporated many useful features, the most prominent of which is the capacity for direct design to closed loop frequency response specifications. This paper introduces the development of optimization-based algorithms facilitating design of minimum-gain controllers meeting closed loop specifications. This is known as the optimal loop shaping problem. The development of a CAD package to carry out the design is shown to possess numerous advantages, eliminating the "cut-and-try" design step historically required in QFT.
