Nowadays, the growth in structural materials, analytical methods and design tools has greatly promoted the development and applications of thin-walled structures in different fields. Thin-walled structures are broadly utilized in building construction, bridge construction, storage racks, transmission towers, automotive, ships, aircraft, etc. Many factors, including cost and weight economy, new materials and processes and the growth of powerful methods of analysis have contributed to this growth, which concentrates specifically on structures in which problems arise due to the thinness of the walls. This book 'Stability and Vibrations of Thin-Walled Composite Structures' brings together state of the art information on the most recent advances from the global research and development community regarding new theories, experiment, design methods and applications. It reviews on the stability and vibrations of thin walled composite structures such as columns, plates, and stringer stiffened plates and shells to enables both engineers and academics to locate valuable, up-to-date knowledge on buckling and vibrations, be it methodical or tentative, and use it for estimation or evaluation. This book serves as valuable guide for students, researchers and engineering professionals working in structural mechanics, aerospace and composite structures. The book will be of interest to all those working in the field of thin-walled structures. Specifically, advanced graduate students in mechanical and aerospace engineering and applied mathematics as well as practicing engineers will find new and important results in this book.

The papers contained herein were presented at the Sixth International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/6) held at Paisley College, Scotland in September 1991. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College. It was co-sponsored by Scottish Enterprise, the National Engineering Laboratory, the US Army Research, Development and Standardisation Group-UK, Strathclyde Regional Council and Renfrew District Council. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful ICCS/1/2/3/4 and 5 held at Paisley in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1989 respectively. As we enter the final decade of this century many organisations throughout the world are adopting a prophetic role by attempting to forecast future scientific advances and their associated impact on mankind. Although some would argue that to do so is folly, without such futuristic visionaries the world would be that much poorer. IntelJigent speculation based on research trends and historical advances, rather than fanciful theories, breathes a healthy air of enthusiasm into the scientific community. Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.

Metal foams are at the forefront of technological development for the automotive, aerospace, and other weight-dependent industries. They are formed by various methods, but the key facet of their manufacture is the inclusion of air or other gaseous pockets in the metal structure. The fact that gas pockets are present in their structure provides an obvious weight advantage over traditionally cast or machined solid metal components. The unique structure of metal foams also opens up more opportunities to improve on more complex methods of producing parts with space inclusions such as sand-casting. This guide provides information on the advantages metal foams possess, and the applications for which they may prove suitable. Offers a concise description of metal foams, their manufacture, and their advantages in industry Provides engineers with answers to pertinent questions surrounding metal foams Satisfies a major need in the market for information on the properties, performance, and applications of these materials
