Even with sympathy, with insight, and with the sincerest desire to prove the open sesame to the secret chambers of the author's treasury one may be conscious that he himself has missed a part of the charm of the words to which alone the doors swing wide. Where the author is a foreigner all of these difficulties are increased, and one feels that not only has the author been at a disadvantage in using a foreign tongue, but that he himself is at a greater disadvantage in failing to com prehend all that the author has written. There is, however, one common ground on which all peoples and all races stand: human nature; and within the limits of this common heritage sympathy and a will to appreciate lead, at least, toward the door through which we must enter to know all which the author has attempted.
