Within this thesis, "Stories and Spaces: Adapting the Narrative of Cinema into Interior Architecture," the researcher will address how architecture can adapt a film narrative into a functional, interior environment. In the same way that film takes a narrative and brings the story to life through moving image and sound, successful architecture takes a space and gives it life through thoughtful design. The researcher theorizes that cinema can be re-stated within interior architecture that is sustainable, functional, and socially relevant. Cinematographers use a combination of set design principles and existing locations to produce and film a movie. Similarly, the researcher will apply and combine principles of set design, interior planning and architecture toward redesigning an existing space. One or more popular films of various genres will be used to inform how the space is utilized and developed, thus creating a visual narrative. The researcher has defined that the narrative will be determined by her individual interpretation and analysis of these films, based on specific elements derived from the characters and storyline. Additionally, the process by which these films will be analyzed is to be created by the researcher as a new form of methodology. The location will be an existing structure that can be revitalized through adaptive reuse. This thesis will examine how architects and production designers within the film industry have used a film narrative to inform their design process, and how architecture is used to reinforce and progress the storyline. Additionally, the researcher will examine the results that these professionals produced. Within the Methodology section, case studies will determine how narration through design the researcher will be informed of how to develop an inspiring interior space that is based on one or more popular films. In conclusion, the Recommendation will be to design and create a sustainable, interior space through adaptive reuse that is influenced by one or more popular films, with enough functionality and sophistication to be appreciated by all age groups.
