“A lovely weave of memory and science, great characters and compassionate humor” from the author of Sweat: A History of Exercise (Anne Lamott). We often think of sleep as mere stasis, a pause button we press at the end of each day. Yet sleep is full of untold mysteries—eluding us when we seek it too fervently, throwing us into surreal dream worlds when we don’t, sometimes even possessing our bodies so that they walk and talk without our conscious volition. Delving into the mysteries of his own sleep patterns, Bill Hayes marvels, “I have come to see that sleep itself tells a story.” An acclaimed journalist and memoirist—and partner of the late neurologist Oliver Sacks—Hayes has been plagued by insomnia his entire life. The science and mythology of sleep and sleeplessness form the backbone to Hayes’s narrative of his personal battles with sleep and how they colored his waking life, as he threads stories of fugitive sleep through memories of growing up in the closet, coming out to his Irish Catholic family, watching his friends fall ill during the early years of the AIDS crisis in San Francisco, and finding a lover. An erudite blend of science and personal narrative, Sleep Demons offers a poignant introduction to the topics for which Hayes has since become famous, including art, eros, city life, the history of medical science, and queer identity. “This intimate and beautifully written book brings scientific research alive in a heartfelt and deeply personal narrative.” —The Guardian “Memoir, history, and science come together and apart again in a book that reads very much like a dream.” —Out magazine

Sleep paralysis... It has long been experienced and yet not understood. Science tells us that it is nothing more than our bodies not waking up when our minds do. Experience makes us wonder if it is something more. The demon sitting on your chest, the old hag, incubus, succubus... They really are all the same thing. The feeling that something else is in the room with you. The ability to see a dark shadow next to you or above you but the inability to do anything about it because everything except your eyes is paralyzed. The fear that comes with wanting to scream out for help but having no voice to do so is indescribable. There truly is nothing as terrifying as sleep paralysis and sadly few people talk about it for fear of being labeled as crazy. Having suffered from sleep paralysis since the age of 7 I was determined to find relief. After years of struggling, fearing sleep, forcing myself to stay awake, and trying to learn about sleep paralysis I was able to end my struggle. I want to help people to feel free to speak about their experiences but more than anything I hope that someone can learn from my experience and use what I have gone through to stop the sleep paralysis that they are suffering from. Today, I am free from the demon of sleep paralysis and I believe that you can be as well.

He came across time to save her, each time with a sacrifice of his own. How long before HIS time runs out? Prophecy says the last priest of the secret order will rise to winged godhood after the apocalypse and save the human race. All Raven needs to ascend is an empath and an angel. The problem? There aren't any angels in this timeline, and the only surviving empath is a demon-possessed madwoman. With the help of The Book of Time, written by his previous incarnation, Raven must travel into the past, each time changing a single memory to create a better future. Each time he removes a traumatic memory for the empath, he changes her -- and what she means to him. Raven has just one night to free Lilah from madness and find the angel. Can he save the future by changing the past? Dark magic, black ops, and soul-stealing sex. Angels, demons, witches, empaths, and English professors all conceal the Secret Lives of Librarians, the Historical Society, and the ancient priesthood of a long-dead god. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.

Jessica isn't your average teenager. Though nobody at her high school knows it, she's a published author. Her vampire novel Tiger, Tiger has just come out under the pen name Ash Night. Jessica often wishes she felt as comfortable with her classmates as she does among the vampires and witches of her fiction. She has always been treated as an outsider at Ramsa High. But two new students have just arrived in Ramsa, and both want Jessica's attention. She has no patience with overly friendly Caryn, but she's instantly drawn to handsome Alex, a cocky, mysterious boy who seems surprisingly familiar. If she didn't know better, she'd think Aubrey, the alluring villain from Tiger, Tiger had just sprung to life. That's impossible, of course; Aubrey is a figment of her imagination. Or is he? Nail-bitingly suspenseful, here is the deliciously eerie follow-up to In the Forests of the Night, by the remarkable fifteen-year-old novelist Amelia Atwater-Rhodes.
