During 1957, domestic landings of shrimp at United States ports on the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico Coasts amounted to over 116 million pounds with a dockside value of nearly $72 million to the fishermen. Over 85 percent of the total production was landed at Gulf of Mexico ports. Texas led in production with nearly 46 million pounds followed by Florida and Louisiana. Brown shrimp 70 million pounds), pink shrimp (25 million pounds), and white (21 million pounds) made up the bulk of the landings. U.S. shrimp trawlers landing at Gulf ports completed 132,551 landing trips during 1957. These craft fished an average of almost 28 hours and caught nearly 748 pounds per trip.
