Excerpt from Scouting for Sheridan The task which the author commenced twenty years ago is finished. When "The Young Kentuckians Series" was commenced the author intended writing only of the part which the Army of the Cumberland took in the Civil War, for of that army he was a part. But the task grew until it embraced the East and the West. It is with some misgivings that this volume has been written, for the great war in which this nation is now engaged must necessarily detract from that which occurred fifty and sixty years ago. But the part this country is now taking could never have been if the South had been successful, for we would be a divided people. The old soldiers of 1861-65 builded better than they knew. In saving the nation they saved freedom to the world, for without the aid of this country Germany would rule the world. The author has no apology to make for the criticisms he has made in these books. He may be wrong, but he has written what he believes. He has not exaggerated the deeds of General Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. The author thinks he should be given equal praise with General Grant for the successful termination of the Virginia campaign. "...thank God, the Rebel Scout has lived long enough to outgrow many of the prejudices engendered by the war." Though able to write those words in 1905, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, Dickinson College-educated Maryland native, Thomas Conrad was a passionate fighter for the Rebel cause. Working as a scout in the command of J.E.B. Stuart, he fought alongside his Phi Kappa Sigma buddy and life-long friend, Daniel Mountjoy Cloud. Along the way, he met and ate with Jefferson Davis and was part of a plan (separate from the Booth conspirators) to kidnap Abraham Lincoln. According to Conrad: "Neither President Davis nor his secretary of war had any knowledge of my contemplated attempt to capture Mr. Lincoln and bring him to Richmond. I consulted only the military secretary of General Bragg, and General Bragg at that time had command of Richmond and its defenses. This military secretary enjoined me, above all things, not to hurt a hair upon Lincoln’s head, or treat him with the slightest indignity." By chance, one of Conrad's men met up with John Wilkes Booth during his escape and furnished him with one of Conrad's horses, on which Booth rode to the site of his death. After the war, Conrad was president of what is today Virginia Tech. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. A newly-minted West Point lieutenant in 1876, he requested posting to George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry just days after the general's death at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He accompanied the brother of General Philip Sheridan to recover the remains of Custer and the other officers from the battlefield at the Little Bighorn in 1877. He met and befriended most of the important Plains Indians as well as figures like Buffalo Bill Cody, General Phil Sheridan, Frederick Remington, and others. He met "the idol of the 7th Cavalry," Captain Frederick Benteen, modeled his own style of command after Benteen, and remained friends with him until the latter's death. Fluent in Indian sign language, a true friend to Native Americans, probably no white man of his time was better at communicating with and gaining the trust of the tribes with which he worked than Hugh Lenox Scott. During his time in the west, he more than once turned down assignments to more desirable posts to remain working with the tribes. Of his fellow white citizens, he wrote: "...there is an inborn racial fear of the Indian in our minds, due to our ignorance of his thought, enhanced by the tales of scalping and bloodshed we were fed on in our youth." Many times, Scott put himself at great risk to avoid bloodshed between whites and Indians. This fascinating, exciting, and extremely important memoir is one that every student of American history should own and read repeatedly. Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the movement that changed the country forever.
