Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragic Justice Introduction [9]nature, to the pride Of Coriolanus, the anger of Lear, and even to Antony's infatuation or Macbeth's ambi tion. The heart of Aristotle's doctrine Of katharsis, in truth, does not lie in this manner Of hamartia, whether in Hamlet or in much Of his own material in Greek tragedy, in Sophocles' Philoctetes or Antigone, for ex ample, both plays barely touched upon by Aristotle. Poetic justice in its usual sense will not serve to purge our emotions, nor to reconcile us to catastrophe. Yet some satisfaction Of our sense of justice is necessary if the tragic emotions are not to be heightened and to remain unresolved in a final disharmony. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: Edited With an Introduction and Notes This human sympathy with the sufferings of the tragic victim does not imply any approval of the error in conduct or flaw of character from which the tragic result inevitably follows. On the contrary, our sense of justice often imperiously demands in the dénouement a portrayal of the avoidless retribution, the sight of which yet stirs our intensest pity. Excerpt from The Works of Shakespeare: The Tragedy of Hamlet This edition of Hamlet aims in the first place at giving a trustworthy text. Secondly, it attempts to exhibit the variations from that text which are found in the primary sources - the Quarto of I 604 and the Folio of I 62 3 - in so far as those variations are of importance towards the ascertainment of the text. Every variation is not recorded, but I have chosen to err on the side of excess rather than on that of defect. Readings from the Quarto of 1603 are occa sionally given, and also from the later Quartos and Folios, but to record such readings is not a part of the design of this edition. The letter Q means Quarto 1604; F means Folio 1623. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: Edited, With Notes The text of this edition of Hamlet is based upon a careful collation of the quarto of 1604 and the folio of 1623 with the other early editions and the leading modern ones. All the important Daria: lertz'ones are given in the Notes; so that the reader, If he considers my text too conservative, has all the materials necessary for making one to suit himself. In the Notes my indebtedness to Furness is acknowledged on almost every page, and yet is by no means fully recorded. His edition furnishes an abstract and epitome of the vast literature of Hamlet, and is indis pensable to the teacher and the critical scholar. He found it no easy task to condense his material into two octavo volumes; and in carrying out my more modest plan I have found a like difiiculty in keeping within my limited space. The play is one of the longest (about twice as long as mamatli), and the amount that has been written about it far exceeds that on any other of Shakespeare's works. Furness does not exaggerate when he says N 0 one Of mortal mould (save iiim whose blessed feet were nailed for our advantage to the bitter cross') ever trod this earth, commanding such absorbing interest as this Hamlet, this mere creation of a poet's brain. NO sxllable that be u hispers, no word let fall by any one near him, but is caught and pondered as no nords ever have been, cxcept of Holy Writ. Upon no throne built by mortal hands has ever 'beat so fierce a light' as upon that airy fabric reared at Elsinore. Excerpt from The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet Q 1 differs so considerably, and in so many minute details, from the received text, that the variations can not be rightly exhibited in notes; it must be read in its entirety, and happily it is easily accessible in the facsimile by Praetorius, in Mommsen's reprint, in the Caiizorielge Shakespeare, in Furness, and (with most advantage for the student) in the New Shakspere Society's reprint of Parallel Texts of t/ze First Two Quartos, admirably edited by Mr. Daniel. Such readings as have been adopted from Q I into the text of modern editors have a special claim to attention; these I have, with few exceptions, recorded, and have added in notes and in Appendix I. Several lines and passages differing from the received text in a way which can hardly be accounted for by errors of the printer or reporter. In these, or in some of these, we probably find work of Shakespeare discarded in his revision of the play.
