Over the last decade the telecommunications domain has gone through historical changes. The evolution of networks, technologies and telecommunications vision has experienced rapid changes. Mobility becomes a must and there is an increasing demand by mobile end-users for services. Delivering value added services anywhere can be possible by taking advantage of the flexibility of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Traditional service architectures fail to address the characteristics of such new networks. This book proposes a novel architecture to provide services in the challenging MANETs. Two types of MANETs are addressed: the stand alone and the Multihop Cellular networks (MCNs). Architectures and benefits from the network operators' point of view are presented and discussed. Since SIP is widely used in today's 3G networks, SIP servlets are considered as the basis framework. The work represents a first step in the area. Therefore, the book may help professional, student or researchers interested in service architectures and Mobile Ad hoc networks as an introduction to the domain but also to go further for commercial solutions or address open issues.

Service provisioning in ad hoc networks is challenging given the difficulties of communicating over a wireless channel and the potential heterogeneity and mobility of the devices that form the network. Service placement is the process of selecting an optimal set of nodes to host the implementation of a service in light of a given service demand and network topology. The key advantage of active service placement in ad hoc networks is that it allows for the service configuration to be adapted continuously at run time. Service Placement in Ad Hoc Networks proposes the SPi service placement framework as a novel approach to service placement in ad hoc networks. The SPi framework takes advantage of the interdependencies between service placement, service discovery and the routing of service requests to minimize signaling overhead. The work also proposes the Graph Cost / Single Instance and the Graph Cost / Multiple Instances placement algorithms.

In wireless ad-hoc networks spontaneously formed by mobile nodes, diverse node movements cause the network to partition into completely disconnected subnetworks. The network partitioning poses significant challenges to the provisioning of centralized service in the ad-hoc network, since as the result of partitioning, many mobile nodes become disconnected from the central server. In this thesis, we propose a collection of novel run-time algorithms that adaptively maintain the availability of the centralized service to all mobile nodes while minimizing the service cost incurred. We exploit the mobility pattern exhibited by mobile hosts. In particular, the central server predicts network partitioning using techniques to recognize the mobility pattern and replicate service in advance. The regular mobile nodes judiciously select service based on mobility similarity to adapt to the dynamic network partitionings. Our simulation results show the algorithms proposed can efficiently provide network-wide service accessibility in the frequently partitionable ad-hoc networks.

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are wireless networks having transient mobile nodes with no pre-installed infrastructure. They are of utmost interest for the future networks owing to their flexibility, effortlessness of deployment and related low cost. Most of the research problems of mobile ad hoc networks are stems from mobile computing. The constraints like resource-poor elements and their limitations, gives rise to many research problems. Among them, the research issue, service provisioning for application development by the concept of reusing is of high importance. Services are hardware or software entities that can be shared or reused by many other software entities. One of the main uses of mobile ad hoc networks is accessing the services that are provided by other nodes where ever possible. This reuse of services is predominantly used in fixed networks. The process used to realise the reusing of services is termed as service provisioning. The service provisioning is used to describe the process starting form service selection, service binding service maintenance and termination. Because of their dynamic nature, service provisioning in mobile ad hoc networks should have different components compared to that of fixed networks. This thesis focuses on finding the essential new components, or modifications to be done in the existing components to enable service provisioning in mobile ad hoc networks. In fixed networks reusing of services is done by Service Oriented Architecture. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural paradigm and discipline that may be used to build infrastructures enabling the interaction of those with needs and those with capabilities via services. In SOA the service providers will advertise their capabilities, which are stored in the central entity namely service broker. The service capability information includes both functional and non-functional properties. Whenever a client needs a service, the requester's requirements will be compared with the service capabilities. If they found a matching service provider they can access the service.

Guiding readers through the basics of these rapidly emerging networks to more advanced concepts and future expectations, this book examines the most pressing research issues in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). Leading researchers, industry professionals, and academics provide an authoritative perspective of the state of the art in MANETs. The book includes surveys of recent publications that investigate key areas of interest such as limited resources and the mobility of mobile nodes. It considers routing, multicast, energy, security, channel assignment, and ensuring quality of service.
