Rediscover the lost art of cocktailing. Of all the skills you might acquire in life, the ability to make a good cocktail is a never going to be a waste of your time. No lover will complain when you present them a well-iced Negroni as they walk through your door; no house-guest will complain at the suggestion of a round of Gin Sours. To cocktail was coined as a verb by F Scott Fitzgerald in 1928. This amateur guide to cocktailing, embodies Fitzgerald's Golden Age spirit while giving it a thoroughly modern makeover. Expressly structured for the amateur, the first chapter of this book shows how just 6 bottles are needed for 25 classic cocktails. From this simple start the book brings a wealth of cocktail recipes and knowledge, all the while reminding you of the pleasures of cocktailing chez toi. From a Pean to the Spritz and a rehabilitation of the Bromx, through cocktail history and cocktailonomics, to go-to lists like 'The Top 5 Girly Drinks', The Spirits is a perfect mix. Informative recipes blended with whimsy and anecdote, are given a dash of fun, and finished with a twist of brilliantly wry humour.

Excerpt from The Spirit Home, a Closet Companion: Dedicated to Mothers and Their Children, Given by Spirits From the Higher Sphere In this little work we show to the passive, Spiritual mind, the spirit of the Bible and that the man deveiopedf or Creator man, or image of God, is that Spirit clothed 'with flesh, as one and the same with the inspired part of the letter of the Bible, which we explain from Genesis to Revelation; and, in doing so, we leave not one stone upon another that is not taken down and examined, before it is admitted into the construction of the image, which is a fac-simile representation of the globe on which you. Live, and in 'which, also, is seen the Opening gates, and the inefiable delight, and dazzling tapestry, with the gold and diamond spangled beauty of the new Jerusalem, the city of our God, whose golden gates stand Open night and day, to welcome you, whoe'er you be, when you shall leave your poor earthly body in the hands of yourfriends on earth, to be deposited in the grave. Do you know someone who lives in a haunted house? What would you do if you moved into a haunted house? The story you are about to read is true. In fact it is the story of me and my family. I decided I wanted to move but where should I move to. I decided maybe I should leave the city and look further up north. I never expected to come this far up but here we are. They always say you never know what you're looking for until it hits you. One rainy Saturday morning I took the trip Upstate a three hour drive one way to meet with the real estate lady for another day of house hunting. This day I found the house I was looking for, or did it find me? Why I say this is because this is the house that I and my children said we didn't want when she had sent us the pictures over the internet. When the family and I went to meet with the real estate lady and the house inspector something happened that caught our attention as well as the attention of the real estate lady. I don't think we were wanted here. The Spirits did many things to send us away. I didn't get flustered too quickly though. I knew I needed help with this problem but who would I call. Now my hunt was on, I knew I needed to contact the paranormal society to get help. I started going through the internet. I found a chapter in Pennsylvania that was able to help me. Join me as I tell our story of what life is like in a home inhabited by Spirits. It's certainly never dull. I am a single mother of two children ages now 7 and 12 who wasn't happy in her environment or surroundings. My home life, my job, my neighborhood were all getting me down. I wanted out of everything. I took a big chance moving away from my family. My in laws also took a chance with me. I was making a new start for myself, my children and my in laws. I was scared not knowing where I would end up. It took me a year of house hunting, trying to find a home that I could afford. Searching in Queens or Brooklyn was impossible the prices there were astronomical. I always take chances in my life and usually stand on my feet like a cat in the end. This house wasn't on my list of possibilities but here I am two years later with a story to tell.

Examines how the ancient customs of constructing and keeping a house formed a sacred bond between homes and their inhabitants • Shares many tales of house spirits, from cajoling the local land spirit into becoming one’s house spirit to the good and bad luck bestowed by mischievous house elves • Explains the meaning behind door and window placement, house orientation, horsehead gables, the fireplace or hearth, and the threshold • Reveals the charms, chants, prayers, and building practices used by our ancestors to bestow happiness and prosperity upon their homes and their occupants Why do we hang horseshoes for good luck or place wreaths on our doors? Why does the groom carry his new bride over the threshold? These customs represent the last vestiges from a long, rich history of honoring the spirits of our homes. They show that a house is more than a building: it is a living being with a body and soul. Examining the extensive traditions surrounding houses from medieval times to the present, Claude Lecouteux reveals that, before we entered the current era of frequent moves and modular housing, moving largely from the countryside into cities, humanity had an extremely sacred relationship with their homes and all the spirits who lived there alongside them--from the spirit of the house itself to the mischievous elves, fairies, and imps who visited, invited or not. He shows how every aspect of constructing and keeping a house involved rites, ceremony, customs, and taboos to appease the spirits, including the choice of a building lot and the very materials with which it was built. Uncovering the lost meaning behind door and window placement, the hearth, and the threshold, Lecouteux shares many tales of house spirits, from the offerings used to cajole the local land spirit into becoming the domestic house spirit to the good and bad luck bestowed upon those who seek the help of the “Little Money Man.” He draws on studies and classic literature from old Europe--from Celtic lands and Scandinavia to France and Germany to the far eastern borders of Europe and into Russia--to explain the pagan roots behind many of these traditions. Revealing our ancestors’ charms, prayers, and practices to bestow happiness and prosperity upon their homes, Lecouteux shows that we can invite the spirits back into our houses, old or new, and restore the sacred bond between home and inhabitant.

Chilean writer Isabel Allende’s classic novel is both a richly symbolic family saga and the riveting story of an unnamed Latin American country’s turbulent history. In a triumph of magic realism, Allende constructs a spirit-ridden world and fills it with colorful and all-too-human inhabitants. The Trueba family’s passions, struggles, and secrets span three generations and a century of violent social change, culminating in a crisis that brings the proud and tyrannical patriarch and his beloved granddaughter to opposite sides of the barricades. Against a backdrop of revolution and counterrevolution, Allende brings to life a family whose private bonds of love and hatred are more complex and enduring than the political allegiances that set them at odds. The House of the Spirits not only brings another nation’s history thrillingly to life, but also makes its people’s joys and anguishes wholly our own.
