This dissertation presents a search for heavy, long-lived, neutral particles that decay to photons in proton anti-proton collisions with a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment. Such particles are typical of models of Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (GMSB). We select events with a single photon, missing transverse energy, and little other activity in the detector. We model the photon arrival time for Standard Model and non-collision sources using a data-driven method and consider photons which have a time of arrival at the detector which is significantly delayed relative to predictions. Using 6.3 fb-1 of data collected from December 2004 to June 2010, we observe 322 events in the signal region compared to a background prediction of 287 ± 24 events. While the data are consistently above predictions, we report a model excess with a significance of 1.2 standard deviations from the null hypothesis. We have observed exclusive? production in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, using data from 1.11 ± 0.07 fb−1 integrated luminosity taken by the Run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. We selected events with two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E{sub T}> 2.5 GeV and pseudorapidity.

A search for new physics in the channel p[anti p][yields][gamma][gamma]jj has been studied. In some extended Higgs models, a light neutral scalar Higgs boson is produced with suppressed couplings to fermions and standard model(SM) strength couplings to vector bosons(bosonic Higgs), thus enhancing the H[yields][gamma][gamma] channel. We required one photon in the event with E[sup[gamma]][sub T]> 20 GeV, [vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]1.1 or 1.5[vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]2.0 and a second photon with E[sup[gamma]][sub T] 15 GeV, [vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]1.1 or 1.5[vert-bar][eta][sup[gamma]][vert-bar]

For graduate students unfamiliar with particle physics, An Introductory Course of Particle Physics teaches the basic techniques and fundamental theories related to the subject. It gives students the competence to work out various properties of fundamental particles, such as scattering cross-section and lifetime. The book also gives a lucid summary of the main ideas involved. In giving students a taste of fundamental interactions among elementary particles, the author does not assume any prior knowledge of quantum field theory. He presents a brief introduction that supplies students with the necessary tools without seriously getting into the nitty-gritty of quantum field theory, and then explores advanced topics in detail. The book then discusses group theory, and in this case the author assumes that students are familiar with the basic definitions and properties of a group, and even SU(2) and its representations. With this foundation established, he goes on to discuss representations of continuous groups bigger than SU(2) in detail. The material is presented at a level that M.Sc. and Ph.D. students can understand, with exercises throughout the text at points at which performing the exercises would be most beneficial. Anyone teaching a one-semester course will probably have to choose from the topics covered, because this text also contains advanced material that might not be covered within a semester due to lack of time. Thus it provides the teaching tool with the flexibility to customize the course to suit your needs.

Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life and hold the key to solving many of humanity's most pressing current and future challenges. The United States' position in the global economy is declining, in part because U.S. workers lack fundamental knowledge in these fields. To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built.
