This thesis describes a model independent search for new physics with a decay signature of three or more leptons and missing transverse energy in 35pb−1 of proton-proton collisions at the LHC at a center mass energy?s = 7 TeV using the CMS detector. Standard Model backgrounds are predicted using both simulations and collision data. The observed events are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. The results are interpreted using various supersymmetric models: gravity mediated symmetry breaking, gauge mediated symmetry breaking with slepton co-NLSP, and leptonic R-parity violating.

A search for new physics is performed using events with two isolated same-sign leptons, two or more jets, and missing transverse momentum. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb1. Multiple search regions are defined by classifying events in terms of missing transverse momentum, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, the transverse mass associated with a W boson candidate, the number of jets, the number of b quark jets, and the transverse momenta of the leptons in the event. The analysis is sensitive to a wide variety of possible signals beyond the standard model. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Constraints are set on various supersymmetric models, with gluinos and bottom squarks excluded for masses up to 1300 and 680 GeV, respectively, at the 95% confidence level. Upper limits on the cross sections for the production of two top quark-antiquark pairs (119 fb) and two same-sign top quarks (1.7 pb) are also obtained. Furthermore, selection efficiencies and model independent limits are provided to allow further interpretations of the results.

This thesis presents results for a search for new physics based on 36 pb-1 of data taken during 2010 by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We specifically look at the signature with a single isolated lepton, jets, and large missing transverse momentum. To predict the standard model backgrounds in this search, two separate and complementary methods are employed, each of which use control samples in the data. The standard model background predictions are consistent with the observed number of events in both the muon and electron channels and for both background prediction methods. In addition, the observed missing transverse momentum distribution agrees well with the standard model prediction. In the absence of a signal we proceed to set limits in the contrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (CMSSM) parameter space.

A search for new physics in proton-proton collisions having final states with an electron or muon and missing transverse energy is presented. The analysis uses data collected in 2012 with the CMS detector, at an LHC center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb${̂-1}$. No significant deviation of the transverse mass distribution of the charged lepton-neutrino system from the standard model prediction is found. Mass exclusion limits of up to 3.28 TeV at a 95% confidence level for a W${̂\prime}$ boson with the same couplings as that of the standard model W boson are determined. Results are also derived in the framework of split universal extra dimensions, and exclusion limits on Kaluza-Klein W${̂(2)}_{{\rm KK}}$ states are found. The final state with large missing transverse energy also enables a search for dark matter production with a recoiling W boson, with limits set on the mass and the production cross section of potential candidates. Finally, limits are established for a model including interference between a left-handed W${̂\prime}$ boson and the standard model W boson, and for a compositeness model.

We present the results of a search in p[bar p] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV for anomalous production of events containing a photon with large transverse energy and a lepton (e or[mu]) with large transverse energy, using 86 pb[sup -1] of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994-95 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The presence of large missing transverse energy (E[sub T]), additional photons, or additional leptons in these events is also analyzed. The results are consistent with standard model expectations, with the possible exception of photon-lepton events with large E[sub T], for which the probability of a statistical fluctuation of the standard model expectation up to and above the observed level is 0.7%.

Articles focus on the planned European proton-proton collider, and concentrate on physics issues, rather than the more technical concerns addressed in the three previous workshops. The use of energies much higher than those of the American Superconducting Super Collider is featured. Topics include reviews of current projects, hadron collisions, lep
