"While Charles Dickens' immortal story is a compelling tale of transformation, imagine what it would look like had Dickens been ambitious enough to have had Scrooge go on to tackle some of the greatest questions in life, such as: Does God exist? If so, why is there such evil and suffering in this world? Is there meaning and purpose in life? Is there an after-life? Is freedom worth fighting for, and what's at stake if we lose it? These pages are bold enough to do exactly that, and do it brilliantly." - from Dr. Paul Maier, author with over 5 million books in print including a Skeleton in God's Closet. ****** "I've been fascinated by A Christmas Carol since I first saw a movie version on TV when I was an adolescent. From the moment Marley's ghostly face appeared in the knocker of Scrooge's door, I was hooked. Now as an adult, I realize the reason this story has such universal appeal and has become a classic is because of Dickens' genius in portraying so convincingly the complete transformation of a human being from so believably rotten to so believably good in the context of an imaginative, sometimes whimsical, sometimes serious, and always entertaining story. In a similar way, I've humbly endeavored to adapt Dickens' story to portray the complete transformation of one so believably skeptical to one so believably embracing a reasonable faith. I think the only way to portray that type of transformation in a convincing manner is by introducing reason and evidence into the equation. The project in ways resembled putting together a puzzle -- fitting compelling Christian apologetic arguments into one of the greatest stories ever written. The result is a modern day adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' which chronicles the overnight transformation of the world-famous atheist, Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is on a crusade to rid the world of religion (bah-humbug!), and things could hardly be going better with the passage of a new hate-speech law designed in part to target the religious. But his fortunes soon change and he has a 'Dickens of an evening' filled with ghostly encounters during which he's given a chance to reconsider the meaning of life and his answer to the question of God's existence. But is there really anything the ghosts can say or do to bring about a change of heart from this brilliant, hard-core skeptic?" -- from Steve Luhring, author of Scrooge and the Question of God's Existence.

Some philosophers have thought that life could only be meaningful if there is no God. For Sartre and Nagel, for example, a God of the traditional classical theistic sort would constrain our powers of self-creative autonomy in ways that would severely detract from the meaning of our lives, possibly even evacuate our lives of all meaning. Some philosophers, by contrast, have thought that life could only be meaningful if there is a God. God and the Meanings of Life is interested in exploring the truth in both these schools of thought, seeking to discover what God could and couldn't do to make life meaningful (as well as what he would and wouldn't do). Mawson espouses a version of the 'amalgam' or 'pluralism' thesis about the issue of life's meaning – in essence, that there are a number of different legitimate meanings of 'meaning' (and indeed 'life') in the question of life's meaning. According to Mawson, God, were he to exist, would help make life meaningful in some of these senses and hinder in some others. He argues that whilst there could be meaning in a Godless universe, there could be other sorts of meaning in a Godly one and that these would be deeper.

Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Seven years after Jacob Marley and the three ghosts of Christmas changed Ebenezer's life, Scrooge has a problem. He's given away most of his money and brightened many lives, restored churches, and made London workhouses better for those living and working inside. If only all of that made him feel better about his life...Doubt plagues Ebenezer. Even with all of his philanthropy, he still has questions he can't answer. Are the scales balanced? Did he do enough good after that fateful Christmas Eve to avoid Jacob Marley's fate? And after a very special person dies, he adds another question: Why did God let it happen? When he falls ill himself, Ebenezer's questions take on a new desperation. From the Cratchits to the workhouse fundraisers to nephew Fred, you'll be reintroduced to several old friends, as well as a few new ones. With each visitor, Ebenezer tries to get closer to the answers to his questions. As the clock starts to run out, Ebenezer will need the words from an old friend to tip the scales in his favor. Saving Ebenezer picks up on a story started by Charles Dickens in 1843 with A Christmas Carol. Christians will appreciate a heartwarming story of God's love shown in tragedy while all readers will enjoy the common points between Saving Ebenezer and the original work.

William Gerber has matched his keen analysis of the key problems concerning God with a wealth of reflections from the wisdom of the ages. Thus, he has gotten the great thinkers of the world to work for him - and for you [...] This handy book has considerable value as a reference work while giving abundant thought to the reflective reader who wonders about God. Philosophy as an art of wondering must face the God questions. These are questions not only of God's existence, but of what God might exist as, of how we might know that, and of what such a God's relationship to human beings may be. Reading through this book is journeying through our humanity caught in a universe of wonder [...] Gerber's comments - critical, gentle, eminently reasonable - are a consolation as well as guide to the reader. Even if this work of erudition and inquiry doesn't answer all our questions about God, we are better human beings for reading it and taking it to heart. Maybe God could learn something about us from it too. - Robert Ginsberg, Executive Editor
