Excerpt from Scouting for Sheridan The task which the author commenced twenty years ago is finished. When "The Young Kentuckians Series" was commenced the author intended writing only of the part which the Army of the Cumberland took in the Civil War, for of that army he was a part. But the task grew until it embraced the East and the West. It is with some misgivings that this volume has been written, for the great war in which this nation is now engaged must necessarily detract from that which occurred fifty and sixty years ago. But the part this country is now taking could never have been if the South had been successful, for we would be a divided people. The old soldiers of 1861-65 builded better than they knew. In saving the nation they saved freedom to the world, for without the aid of this country Germany would rule the world. The author has no apology to make for the criticisms he has made in these books. He may be wrong, but he has written what he believes. He has not exaggerated the deeds of General Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. The author thinks he should be given equal praise with General Grant for the successful termination of the Virginia campaign. Excerpt from The Scout of the Potomac: Or, Loyal, Brave and True; Dedicated to Phil; Sheridan Post No; 3, G. A. R.; Department of Wisconsin James M. well, well, I cannot stand it much longer. The war has lasted almost four months, and instead of joining my northern friends in the fierce contest against the rebellious southern aristocracy, I am forced to hang around here in the very midst of rebeldom, idle waiting for this miserable ankle of mine to get well, and let me out of this golden cage. And this Mrs. Langlade- she has kept me in her house during my sickness, and out of sheer gratitude, I must refrain from expressing my loyal sentiments. She is the fiercest rebel in the south. But if it had not been for her daughter's nursing, my career would have ended here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Crag-Nest: A Romance of the Days of Sheridan's Ride The morning breeze from the front bore to them irregular thud of cannon; 'the morning sun gilded the dust they spurned behind them to Obscure - then and since - the distanced staff and guard in their rear. Little Phil and big, black Rienzi were taking that Sheri dan's Ride, which has given motif for more picture, song, story and misstated history than any other single function of the war. Saying this is no tittle of disparagement to the most noted and successful cavalry leader of the Union side; and I have little doubt that the sturdy and commonsensible - ii sometimes slightly profane - sabreur was as much amused as were many cooler think ers, at the wild acclaim over a feat which dwindles to nothingness, beside the straining test of a Confederate scout; indeed, of more than one of his own couriers.
