Excerpt from Scenes and Memories My Dear Children, The impressions gathered together in this book, though written most of them in this last decade, are all of them taken from very voluminous recollections jotted down at a much earlier period. If one day any of you think it worth while to publish these wider recollections, they will give a true picture of the world as it has appeared to me; for it has, throughout, been my aim to give an exact representation of my impressions of events, things, and people. That will be their only merit. I must explain, however, that the last chapter of this book, 'The Mysterious City, ' which has never been published, is a fantasy written to please a friend long since passed away, by collating records about some very interesting but unknown villas around Florence of which he had taken the photographs. The events I allude to are all true, and most of them I witnessed myself during my frequent and long sojourns in the Mysterious City; it will, however, be readily understood that names could not be given, though many of them will easily be guessed by those who knew the Florence of that day. Excerpt from Round About Home: Irish Scenes and Memories On Saturday afternoon, ' from two to Six, he heard confessions in an Old confessional that was hidden away under the stairs leading to the gallery. When he gave a word of counsel or consolation, he spoke so low the people said 'the ould boy himself couldn't hear, and SO couldn't make plans to spoil the good work of his reverence.' Excerpt from Shifting Scenes: Or Memories of Many Men in Many Lands Now that it is over I look back on the experience with equanimity. The beginning terrified me. All hypnotic doings have about them something of the awful. To be compelled, whether you wish it or not, to obey another is humiliating, but if you add to this that the hypnotizer is an immaterial being with human intelligence and a supernatural dexterity in exercising it, my mental though powerless revolt against the pressure which was being exercised upon me will be easily understood. I am an unusually good sleeper, and ascribe to this talent in great measure the steady duration of my health. Excerpt from Memories and Impressions: 1831-1900 The present volume has not the character of an Autobiography; nor, indeed, could its author plead any of the usual excuses for publishing a Memoir of himself. It is not the life-history of one who has attained to eminence; it is not the record of an eventful career; it contains few, if any, graphic pictures of remarkable scenes or remarkable men. Since I am not one who has kept a diary, some noteworthy incidents have doubtless escaped my recollection; while, on the other hand, I have been under no temptation to insert extracts on matters of slight importance. Excerpt from The Garden of Memories The tall hollyhocks that cast wavering blue shadows on the white stone pathway nod to one another in the breeze, nod, it seems, knowingly, for from the pathway one may see into the pleasant room where the spinet and its fair player are and seeing these may also see the handsome figure of the Captain, who leans upon the spinet, the better to see into those bright eyes that have brought him home to Eng land and Sussex from across the seas, though at this time in the service of his Grace the Captain General there is much to be done and much to be won. Excerpt from Fragrant Memories Through the shadowy past, Like a tomb-searcher, memory ran, Lifting each shroud that time had cast. Campbell. Over these scenes my memory wakes, And fondly broods with miser care; Time the impression deeper makes As streams their channels deeper wear. Burns. And thus, as in memory's bark we shall glide To visit the scenes of our boyhood anew, Though oft we may see, looking down on the tide, The wreck of full many a hope shining through: Yet still, as in fancy we point to the flowers, That once made a garden of all the gay shore, Deceiv'd for the moment, we will still think them ours And breathe the fresh air of life's morning once more Anon. Excerpt from War Memories Here it is - a little book which reflects upon every page the intimate heart-life of the American boy in France, during the World War - what he saw and felt and thought and did, not only in the great crises of battle; but on the march and in the camp - setting forth the first impressions made upon a soldier's mind, under foreign skies, at the cannon 's mouth, and revealing the fact that everywhere and always his thoughts were of the dear ones at home, thousands of miles across the seas. It is like a mirror in its faithful reproduction of the simpler elements which enter into vast and splen did scenes. We have heard much of general move ments; of grand climaxes; of superb exhibitions of man-power, in rthe aggregate; of millions, upon one side, confronting millions upon another; and so vast has been the picture presented to our minds that we have utterly failed to grasp it, except in its out standing characteristics. We have heard too little of the human side of the great wan - too little ofthe things which carry a direct appeal to the deep heart of America. We have been hungry for the minor details - for the smaller threads for the frag mentary episodes and incidents - for the rare and delicate and tender touches of color which are need ed to complete the picture, and to give it beauty, pathos, power and charm. Ever since, in the lone solitudes of the night, we first began to wonder where our boys were, on the other side - if they were still safe - we have longed for such a book; and so far as our personal observa tion extends it is the very first book of this character to appear in print, on either side of the water. The experiences of one soldier are not unlike those of another; and every fond parent who reads this book will feel that his or her boy is writing, though it may be that his spirit now looks down upon them from the unseen halls of the Great Valhalla. Excerpt from Graphic Scenes There are some who claim memories dating back into the first year; but I do not doubt that stories of their childhood, repeated early and often, produced this conviction. The narrative finally stamped itself on the mind, and feeling very much at home, at last posed as a veritable recollection of infantile days.
