Excerpt from Normalites, 1914 The class of 1914: will be the one hundredth class to graduate from the Salem Normal School. During the period of its existence, the school has seen many changes. When first established, she was wont to send forth her daughters (no sons), diploma in hand, twice a year, in January and also in June. The last class to graduate in winter was the class of January, 1897. The Salem Normal School was open only to girls in the beginning, but in 1897 she threw' open her doors to the men of New England. A great many young men have accepted the opportunity and she is now proud of both sons and daughters. Among the changes, the most noticeable is the new plan for the training in teaching. According to this plan, each student has charge of a small class in a room by herself. The students are under the supervision of regular teachers who divide their time among these small classes. All the seniors who have worked under the new plan feel that they have gained a great deal. The opportunities afforded the student teachers are excellent. They are given a chance to meet the problems of the profession on a small scale and cope with them. The power to carry along the work of the class alone, gained under the new plan, will be invaluable when the student teachers are no longer students. The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.

On March 5th, 2007, a car bomb was exploded on al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad. More than thirty people were killed and more than one hundred were wounded. This locale is the historic center of Baghdad bookselling, a winding street filled with bookstores and outdoor book stalls. Named after the famed 10th century classical Arab poet al-Mutanabbi, it has been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community. This anthology begins with a historical introduction to al-Mutanabbi Street and includes the writing of Iraqis as well as a wide swath of international poets and writers who were outraged by this attack. This book seeks to show where al-Mutanabbi Street starts in all of us: personally, in our communities, and in our nations. It seeks to show the commonality between this small street in Baghdad and our own cultural centers, and why this attack was an attack on us all. This anthology sees al-Mutanabbi Street as a place for the free exchange of ideas; a place that has long offered its sanctuary to the complete spectrum of Iraqi voices. This is where the roots of democracy (in the best sense of that word) took hold many hundreds of years ago. This anthology looks toward al-Mutanabbi Street as an affirmation of all that we hope for in a more just society.
