In a meadow at the edge of a forest lived a beautiful, bright blue butterfly. Her name is Sabina and most of the time, she liked being a butterfly. Sometimes, she would see some other creature and wish she was like that creature. One day, a big fat caterpillar crawled up on the plant she was sitting on and said he was not just an ordinary caterpillar but was a magic caterpillar that could make three wishes come true for a price, which he decide on after she made her wishes. Without even thinking about the price, Sabina jumped at the chance to have three wishes granted. She agreed and said her first wish was to fly high up as one of the swallows diving and climbing in the air high above them. With an odd nodding of his head, the caterpillar made Sabina a swallow and she joined the pair of swallows high up. They did not like having a strange swallow joining them like that and soon ran her off. She came back down to the caterpillar to change her back to herself while she decided what to wish for next. She then saw a bumble bee and wished to be one. Again the caterpillar gave his odd nod and just like that, she was a bumble bee. She flapped and fluttered her wings and slowly lifted off the plant. She found that flying was much harder for a bumble bee than for a butterfly and soon got too tired to fly. She crawled back to the caterpillar and was changed back to a butterfly while she thought about her last wish. She remembered how gracefully she could fly and how all the other butterflies were always happy to see her. Then she knew what her last wish would be. She wanted to always be a butterfly and be even a brighter blue than she already was. The caterpillar smiled and nodded in his odd way and made her brighter than before. Then the caterpillar reminded her that she had to pay for her wishes. Sabina held her breath, afraid of what that price might be. What price did the caterpillar want?

Northern Australia is one of few tropical places left on Earth in which biodiversity—and the ecological processes underpinning that biodiversity—is still relatively intact. However, scientific knowledge of that biodiversity is still in its infancy and the region remains a frontier for biological discovery. The butterfly and diurnal moth assemblages of the area, and their intimate associations with vascular plants (and sometimes ants), exemplify these points. However, the opportunity to fill knowledge gaps is quickly closing: proposals for substantial development and exploitation of Australia’s north will inevitably repeat the ecological devastation that has occurred in temperate southern Australia—loss of species, loss of ecological communities, fragmentation of populations, disruption of healthy ecosystem function and so on—all of which will diminish the value of the natural heritage of the region before it is fully understood and appreciated. Written by several experts in the field, the main purpose of this atlas is to compile a comprehensive inventory of the butterflies and diurnal moths of northern Australia to form the scientific baseline against which the extent and direction of change can be assessed in the future. Such information will also assist in identifying the region’s biological assets, to inform policy and management agencies and to set priorities for biodiversity conservation.
