Literary Nonfiction. Biography. History. National Books for Everybody pick (Canada). Never before have as many outrageous and out-sized characters appeared in one place at the same time. Words like rogues, rascals, rapscallions, reprobates and rodomontades don't completely describe these individuals; they are more than each or any combination thereof. They are scalawags. People who claim to push the envelope are stamped, sealed and delivered compared with this bunch. They may be conmen or conwomen, adventurers, fabulists and/or delusional but they all share the extreme passion for life always more Life Some are of the modern era, some go way back, but their lust and spirit link them throughout the ages. This book, like its predecessor, SCALAWAGS: ROGUES, ROUSTABOUTS, WAGS & SCAMPS, is devoted to the celebration of that passion that refuses to be stifled by convention. Read about the adventurous lives and wild exploits of Caroline Otero, Andre Malraux, Lord Timothy Dexter, Suzanne Valadon, William Hunt, Mata Hari, Emma Hamilton, Bata Kindai Amgoza, and many more in this second volume of Scalawags "As noble and valorous as our favorite heroes are, many of us can't resist a good tale of villainy. Christy writes about real-life con artists, adventurers, and hedonists that span ages and continents to deliver us juicy stories of skullduggery and debauchery. And if you like this one, it's the sequel to another book that you could also devour just, try not to break anything if it inspires you to practice swashbuckling in your living room, aye?" Book Riot, "5 Small Press Books to Read in January" "Words like rogues, rascals, rapscallions, reprobates and rodomontades don't completely describe these individuals. These are stories about con artists, adventurers, fabulists and the delusional who all share an extreme passion for life. Some are of the modern era, some go way back, but their lust and spirit link them throughout the ages. This book, like Christy's predecessor, Scalawags: Rogues, Roustabouts, Wags and Scamps, published in 2008, is devoted to the celebration of that passion." Coast Reporter Praise for SCALAWAGS: ROGUES, ROUSTABOUTS, WAGS & SCAMPS: "Christy's work reminds us that losers are cool, that the middle-of- the-road might be smoother but the ditches are more interesting, and that every rounder has a good story to to tell."The Globe and Mail"

All of the bad men in this book did terrible damage to other people. Some were sneaking, low-life cowards. Most of them had nerve to spare. And what did they get out of this behavior? Constant fear, never-ending suspicion, prison, and in many cases death by a bullet or at the end of a hangman's rope. None of them died rich no matter how much property they stole. None of them were heroes, although romantic legends sprung up about some of them. Such was the case with Cockeyed Frank Loving. He would have been forgotten to western history if it had not been for Bat Masterson who did a series of stories about Loving that were published in 1907. Masterson stated that to be an excellent gunfighter you had to have three important qualities, outstanding courage, skill with firearms, and above all, cold, unflinching nerve. Frank Loving had more than enough of all three. About some of the characters in this book: Prairie Dog Dave Morrow made it big selling prairie dogs. He carried a couple of the furry little creatures in his pockets. After a run in with a couple of bandits and from the results of a sharp Bowie knife, many folks swore Dave looked like one of his little friends. Johnny-Behind-the-Deuce Michael O'Rourke felt if he had some deuces showing in his hand he would be a sure winner. A party of angry miners, a rope, and a tree put an end to his rise to fame. Montana Bill's real name was never known but how he loved to con the best of con men. His stringer was always filled with sucker-fish from all avenues of the trade. Custer City, South Dakota, and the Nebraska territory in 1880 breathed a sigh of relief over the grave of Fly Specked Billy Fowler, stagecoach bandit and all around hard case. Leadville, Colorado, had never seen the likes of William Lovell alias Chicken Bill. He was a miner and prospector and above all a great opportunist. He gave his utmost attention to every sucker that stepped off the stagecoach or train. His only problem was his own bad luck. Folks around Elizabeth Town and Cimarron, New Mexico, referred to James Buckley as "Coal Oil Jimmy." He was a stagecoach bandit and cold-blooded killer. His luck ran out when a couple of Texas bounty hunters decided that he was worth more dead than alive. As for Persimmon Bill Chambers and Hurricane Bill Martin, they were a combination of all the above--heartless, wild, mean, and cold-blooded human beings. I would venture to say there were very few fellows who came close to being true heroes: Sam Owls, Pistol Pete, Montana Bill, Bronco Charlie, and a few more. The rest walked with the devil in death and tragedy, and in most cases, it was of their own choosing. As a result of their blood-thirsty and cruel deeds, most ended up in a lost and forgotten grave somewhere on the lonely plains with only the wind to moan them.

Jim Christy’s life and adventures began on the mobbed-up streets of South Philadelphia. Over his 73 years to date, Christy has asserted his freedom of spirit as a vagabond adventurer, latter-day hobo, journalist, private eye, actor, musician, and artist, in over 50 countries around the globe, and still found time to write over 30 books. His early adventures as a street fighter and child tramp provide a unique socio-cultural history of Philadelphia in the 50’s and 60’s before the book moves on to recount his later exploits from some of the most remote and random corners of the world.

Four hundred light years from Earth, Kregen is a marvelous world, peopled by wonderful beings, filled with light and clamor and furor of life lived to the hilt. But Kregen has its darker side, where horror and terror bind innocent people, where sorceries rend reason, where injustice denies light. Here, in the unforgiving yet rewarding world of Kregen, struggling through disaster and triumph, Dray Prescot has made his home. He has acquired a number of titles and estates but now the people of the island empire of Vallia, which has been ripped to shreds by ambitious and mercenary invaders, have called on him to lead them to freedom as their emperor. Reluctant to accept the imperium, he shoulders the burden because, rightly or wrongly, he sees this as the lesser evil... A Life for Kregen: Prescot is the unwilling battle arm of the mysterious Star Lords who contend for that planet with the powerful Savanti. Yet Prescot's ambitions are his own, for he has inherited the remnant of a shattered empire and must fight to bring hope and freedom to all its peoples. By his side stands his princess, Delia of the Blue Mountains, and a band of stalwart companions of many races and species. But arrayed against him are flying armadas, armed hordes, the wizardry of a super scientist, and, most shocking of all, the fury and steel claws of his own daughter, Dayra! A Sword for Kregen: The most popular game among the many peoples of Kregen is one that resembles chess, called Jikaida. Jikaida is a battle of wits and war game pieces that suits well the tension charged atmosphere that envelops Dray Prescot. Because reconquering Vallia is assuming the aspect of such a game, move versus countermove, horde against horde! But Dray Prescot finds himself no longer in control of the game when he becomes a living chessman on a real-life board at the dreaded arena of Jikaida City. There every move is accompanied by bloodshed and behind every game might hang the fate of a city, an island, or even a nation! A Fortune for Kregen: Fame and fortune may await the winners of the life and death game called Jikaida, but for Dray Prescot his triumphs seem to bring only infamy and misfortune. Prescot needs to find a way out of his Jikaida City exile, for his homeland needs him in its hour of danger. But it seems that fate will place him in an even more terrifying game: a treasure hunt played out in the illusion webbed catacombs of a haunted valley where desperate men come to find fortunes at the risk of their followers lives and their own sanity. A Victory for Kregen: The ending of Prescot's stark adventures as a living chess piece in the city of blood games was to be as terrifying as the perils that had gone before. Because now that transposed Earthman has to fight his way back to his embattled Vallian homeland across a sky full of danger and a sea full of death. And when he returns he will find the combat joined, his son at doom's door, his troops up against superior odds, and a battle he must personally fight that would be two battles in two different places at the same time! This edition contains a glossary to the Jikaida cycle.
