Results are presented of a study for evaluating the applicability and accuracy of rocket motor and exhaust plume gasdynamic analytical models. Evaluation of these analytical models was based upon correlation of analytical predictions with experimental data obtained in the High Altitude Plume Radiation Program. The effects of oxidizer-to-fuel ratio gradients, combustion efficiency, combustion chamber mixing, nozzle throat expansion and chemistry model were ascertained. In this work we present mathematical models for a rocket nozzle exhaust plume expanding into a vacuum; specifically, models for plume density introduced by Simons and Cai. The models are discussed and compared to simulation results produced with the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Simons' model, which is based in Prandtl-Meyer flow and boundary layer theory is discussed first. The model has several questionable assumptions and conclusions, which are analyzed. Cai's model, based on molecular gas dynamics, is described and offered as an alternative to Simons'. Numerical gas dynamic simulations utilizing the direct simulation Monte Carlo method were performed to validate Cai's model. These simulations are introduced and discussed. A description of the simulation's method and implementation is included. Literature review of articles related to simulating exhaust plumes is also discussed. Some results from those articles are compared to the aforementioned simulation results to further validate the model.

Describes experimental work performed on a high-speed pre-mixed hydrogen-air jet flame in a co-flowing annular air flow in the presence and absence of base flow at the exit. Includes details on the high-speed flame in a coaxial air facility which was designed, built, and tested to simulate (in a first approximation) rocket exhaust flow conditions. In addition, a new high spatial resolution computer-controlled three-dimensional gear was built to traverse the investigated flow field. The main experimental tool was a two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter with data acquisition and processing system. The tool was used to measure the two main velocity components. Other measurements included turbulence intensities and mean temperatures at various downstream sections. The measured initial and flow field data will serve to evaluate the validity of various turbulence models and to predict the structure of rocket exhaust plumes. Moreover, the experiments established the effect of the base flow on the turbulence structure of the exhaust plume.

The combustion or afterburning of fuel-rich rocket exhaust with the atmosphere may result in large infrared radiation emissions which can play a significant role in the design of missile base components and missile defense systems. Current engineering level models neglect turbulent-chemistry interactions and typically underpredict the intensity of plume afterburning and afterburning burnout. To evaluate the impact of turbulent-chemistry interactions, an assumed pdf model was applied to missile plume simulations of a generic booster. Simulation results reveal turbulent-chemistry interactions to have a large impact on plume signatures as afterburning burnout was approached.

An aerodynamic model is proposed for the exhaust plume issuing from a rocket nozzle exit into quiescent ambient air in which chemical reaction or two-phase flow does not predominate. The model is based on the presently available knowledge and established aerodynamic principles for the various flow regimes involved. The major assumptions made are individually substantiated and justified by experimental evidence in existing literature. A theoretical analysis is carried over the whole flow region based on the Karman's integral approach in the hope of finding solutions for the gross aerodynamic behavior of the plume, especially for ranges up to the full region of the plume. Solutions are matched at the boundary of the inviscid core and turbulent mixing regions. Theoretical results agree closely with related experimental data. (Author).

The effect of rocket exhaust plume impingement on sensitive vehicle surfaces is an area of continuing concern in the design of spacecraft, missiles, and reentry vehicle systems. The objective of the study was to develop a single computer code capable of predicting the production, transport, and deposition of engine and plume contaminants, and the change in absorptivity, emissivity, reflectivity, and transmissivity of a functional spacecraft surface, such as thermal control coatings and optical view ports and lenses, resulting from plume contaminant deposition or mechanical abrasion (sand blasting). Analytical models and computer subprograms have been developed and integrated to form the CONTAM computer program.
