A graphic novel classic — and now an Oscar-nominated animated feature! After best friends Robot and Dog spend a happy day at the beach, Robot's joints freeze up—they've become rusted through by the water. Dog is powerless to help Robot, who can't move an inch and is too heavy for Dog to carry. Eventually, Dog makes the difficult decision to leave Robot there, and return alone to the life they shared. The memory of their friendship lingers, and as the seasons pass, Dog makes (and loses) new friends, from a melting snowman to epicurean anteaters. But Robot, lying rusting on the beach, finds solace in dreams. A masterwork in wordless cartooning, Sara Varon's Robot Dreams is a whimsical and poignant meditation on the power and fragility of relationships.

Since the end of the Second World War—and particularly over the last decade—Japanese science fiction has strongly influenced global popular culture. Unlike American and British science fiction, its most popular examples have been visual—from Gojira (Godzilla) and Astro Boy in the 1950s and 1960s to the anime masterpieces Akira and Ghost in the Shell of the 1980s and 1990s—while little attention has been paid to a vibrant tradition of prose science fiction in Japan. Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams remedies this neglect with a rich exploration of the genre that connects prose science fiction to contemporary anime. Bringing together Western scholars and leading Japanese critics, this groundbreaking work traces the beginnings, evolution, and future direction of science fiction in Japan, its major schools and authors, cultural origins and relationship to its Western counterparts, the role of the genre in the formation of Japan’s national and political identity, and its unique fan culture. Covering a remarkable range of texts—from the 1930s fantastic detective fiction of Yumeno Kyûsaku to the cross-culturally produced and marketed film and video game franchise Final Fantasy—this book firmly establishes Japanese science fiction as a vital and exciting genre. Can robots dream? Do they experience human emotions like fear and ethical dilemmas? They do, if, like André, the year is 2101 and domestic humanoids―programmed to take care of owners' health and wellbeing―use their built-in artificial intelligence to learn and acquire advanced human social skills.André, a smart, domestic humanoid living on Earth becomes abandoned, hunted, and distraught over the mysterious disappearance of his owner and mentor, Clem Wellman. Why has Clem been kidnapped and his family annihilated? André decides he must impersonate a human in order to investigate the treacherous intrigues of weaponized corporate cities. Clem was at one time an inventor, a retired engineer quietly living in Mesa Charter City. Andre is his devoted friend and employee.Andre lives in fear of being discovered and disassembled into his component mechanical parts―ignoring his advanced acquisition of AI emotional feelings and what he experiences as his quintessential soul. The reader is transported into the mind of a 22nd Century android as he struggles with his understanding of consciousness, self-awareness, and the will to survive. In his quest to save his owner, Andre faces renegade robots, arms dealers, evil oligarchs and their malicious minions, driving him to align support with his old friends from Dream Hackers. This is a story, told from the perspective of a robot, about the future of artificial intelligence, our society, and how humans manage to mismanage their interactions. Today, we believe we master machines. In 2101, they may master us.Robot Dreams is the sequel to my best selling book, Dream Hackers; however, it is not a prerequisite of reading the original to enjoy the sequel.

From Isaac Asimov—the bestselling author of I, Robot and Foundation—comes a collection of 20 of his best science fiction stories. “His name is synonymous with all that is best in science fiction.”—The New York Times In a career spanning nearly fifty years, Isaac Asimov—science writer, historian, and futurist—accurately predicted how technological breakthroughs would be developed and utilized, years before they became reality. His foresight envisioned calculators, computerized cars, and advances in the field of robotics. Robot Dreams spans the body of his fiction from the 1940s to the mid-1980s, featuring all of the classic Asimovian themes—from the scientific puzzle and the extraterrestrial thriller to the psychological discourse—presented by the author in an introductory essay. In addition to the title story (a Locus poll winner, and Hugo and Nebula Award finalist), this collection features several of Asimov’s robot tales. A robopsychologist must outwit a machine determined to stay hidden in “Little Robot Lost;” a woman’s talent for “Light Verse” overshadows her true accomplishments with her robot servants; and “The Last Question” presented to computer after computer over a hundred billion years may remain forever unanswered.

From the dawn of European civilization to the twentieth century, the automaton—better known today as the robot—has captured the Western imagination and provided a vital lens into the nature of humanity. Historian Minsoo Kang argues that to properly understand the human-as-machine and the human-as-fundamentally-different-from-machine, we must trace the origins of these ideas and examine how they were transformed by intellectual, cultural, and artistic appearances of the automaton throughout the history of the West. Kang tracks the first appearance of the automaton in ancient myths through the medieval and Renaissance periods, marks the proliferation of the automaton as a central intellectual concept in the Scientific Revolution and the subsequent backlash during the Enlightenment, and details appearances in Romantic literature and the introduction of the living machine in the Industrial Age. He concludes with a reflection on the destructive confrontation between humanity and machinery in the modern era and the reverberations of the humanity-machinery theme today. Sublime Dreams of Living Machines is an ambitious historical exploration and, at heart, an attempt to fully elucidate the rich and varied ways we have utilized our most uncanny creations to explore essential questions about ourselves.
