Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... dictionary of the organ A Accentcoppel. See Electro-pneumatic. Acoustic Phenomena. See Subbass. Acoustic Tones. See Quint. Acuta. See Sharp and Mixture. jiEoline derives its name from the iEolian Harp. (A charming description of this ancient instrument is to be found in Radau's Theory of Sound.) It is of soft, string-toned character, and is found in nearly all large as well as small new organs as an 8' solo stop. It is regarded as the softest of string-toned stops. It is met with in the Passau Cathedral organ as.Eolian Harp 4'. The pipes of the Eoline are properly of tin; but as the art of organ-building to-day is capable of making the transition from wood to metal imperceptible, the lower notes of this and of some other stops may be constructed of wood, especially where cost is a consideration, provided this is expressly stipulated for in the contract. Arbitrary changes in the materials should not, however, be tolerated. This stop is also met with, at times, as an 8' or 16' reed (see Topfer, Orgelbaukunst, vol. i., 180), either like the Physharmonica or surmounted by a small bell. I found in the large Cathedral organ at Riga (Walcker) an iElodicon 16', closely related to the Eoline, as a reed stop on the 2nd manual, and the above-described iEoline as a flue stop on the 4th manual. This stop is now found so frequently in this character, that it would be superfluous to cite further instances of its appearance. I found a 16' Eoline as a reed stop on the 3rd manual of the new organ at The Hague. The iEoline blends well with the Voix celeste (q.v.), which is tuned slightly sharper; also with the Wienerflote and Lieblich-Gedackt. One can advantageously add to this combination the more incisive character of a Flauto Traverso or of a...

First published in 1988, this encyclopedia serves as an overview and point of entry to the complex interdisciplinary field of Victorian studies. The signed articles, which cover persons, events, institutions, topics, groups and artefacts in Great Britain between 1837 and 1901, have been written by authorities in the field and contain bibliographies to provide guidelines for further research. The work is intended for undergraduates and the general reader, and also as a starting point for graduates who wish to explore new fields.
