Current advances in wireless communication are driven by an increased demand for more data and bandwidth, mainly due to the development of new mobile platforms and applications. Ever since then the network operators are overwhelmed by the rapid increase in mobile data traffic, which is primarily fueled by the viewing of data-intensive content. In addition, according to the statistics, the ratio of downlink and uplink data traffic demands have changed drastically over the past decade and they are increasingly asymmetric even over small time periods. In recent years, different solutions, based on topological and architectural innovations of the conventional cellular networks, have been proposed to address the issues related to the increasing data requirements and uplink/downlink traffic asymmetries. The most trivial solution is to scale the network capacity through network densification, i.e., by bringing the network nodes closer to each other through efficient spectrum sharing techniques. The resulting dense networks, also known as heterogeneous networks, can address the growing need for capacity, coverage, and uplink/downlink traffic flexibility in wireless networks by deploying numerous low power base stations overlaying the existing macro cellular coverage. However, there is a need to analyze the interplay of different network processes in this context, since, it has not been studied in detail due to complex user dynamics and interference patterns, which are known to present difficulties in their design and performance evaluation under conventional heterogeneous networks. It is expected that by centralizing some of the network processes common to different network nodes in a heterogeneous network, such as coordination between multiple nodes, it will be easier to achieve significant performance gains. In this thesis, we aim at centralizing the control of the underlying network processes through Centralized Radio Access Networks (C-RAN), to deal with the high data requirements along with the asymmetric traffic demands. We analyze both large-scale centralized solutions and the light-weight distributed variants to obtain practical insights on how to design and operate future heterogeneous networks.

OFDMA-based wireless networks offer a number of advantages including adaptivity to severe channel conditions and robustness in face of inter symbol interference. To fully realize the potential of these networks, resources have to be assigned efficiently to different nodes in the network. This thesis explores different resource allocation and scheduling techniques in OFDMA networks. It proposes algorithms to schedule flows with QoS constraints, and divide IEEE 802.16j frame into zones. The simulations show that though the formulated ILPs perform better than the proposed algorithms, the time taken by the ILP makes them prohibitive for practical purposes. The combination approach, where different heuristics are used depending on the traffic and topology, also performs well. For OFDMA networks where the maximum number of user equipments need to be scheduled, choosing the sets of resources that satisfy the throughput constraint is very important; the "Min Links with Set Allocation" algorithm performs best among all the proposed algorithms. Finally, this thesis also proposes Resource Allocation using Link propagation (RALP) algorithm for assigning resources to femtocells. The simulation results show that RALP performs much better than existing algorithms with respect to spectrum reuse and throughput satisfaction rate of femtocells. Combining RALP with Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) algorithm also allows the algorithm to converge quickly.

This book introduces the sources and historic collection campaigns of resource allocation in wireless communication systems. The unique characteristics of MIMO-OFDMA systems are thoroughly studied and summarized. Remarks on resource allocation and spectrum sharing are also presented, which demonstrate the great value of resource allocation techniques, but also introduce distinct challenges of resource allocation in MIMO-OFDMA systems. Novel resource allocation techniques for OFDMA Systems are surveyed from various applications (e.g., for unicast, or multicast with Guaranteed BER and Rate, subcarrier and power allocation with various detectors, low-complexity energyefficient resource allocation, etc.) in this book. Due to the high mobility and low latency requirements of 5G wireless communications, this book discusses how to deal with the imperfect CSI. It also discusses how to deal with e.g., throughput maximization, outage probabilities maximization and guarantee, energy efficiency, physical-layer security issues with feedback channel capacity constraints, in order to characterize and understand the applications of practical scenes. This book will target professionals & researchers working in the fields of Wireless Communications and Networking, Resource Allocation and Transmissions. Advanced-level students in electrical engineering and computer science will also find this book useful as a secondary textbook.

With the proliferation of mobile devices, the demand for high bandwidth in wireless networks rapidly increases. Small-cells are employed for increased spatial reuse of spectral resources with reduced cell sizes and dense deployments. In the dense deployment of small-cell networks, however, intercell interference is one of the performance limiting-factor in harnessing their potentials of reusing spectrum resources. In addition, unique design features of OFDMA systems pose critical challenges for developing resource management solutions. This motivates us to designing and building practical resource management systems that improve the spectrum efficiency in OFDMA-based 4G cellular networks. Considering network architecture (marco-cell and femto-cell) used in OFDMA networks, we take different approaches for designing resource management schemes. More specifically, we design an efficient video multicast algorithm, MuVi, that optimizes resource utilization while accommodating heterogeneous multiple users in the same OFDMA resource frames. MuVi differentiates video frames and incorporates an efficient radio resource allocation algorithm to optimize the overall video quality across all users in the multicast group. In multi-cell deployment, the interference from neighboring cells is pervasive and severely impacts the performance of interfering cells. Thus, a resource management solution should handle the interference across the femto-cells properly and maximize the spatial reuse to improve capacity. Towards this goal, we propose two solutions, RADION and ProBeam. RADION is a distributed resource management framework that maximizes resource reuse while providing resource isolation when neighboring cells are within transmission range of each other in the time and frequency domains. ProBeam is a practical multi-cell beamforming system that leverages smart antenna to increase spatial reuse in the space domain without sacrificing spectrum resources for resource isolation. We believe this dissertation was successful in developing some of the important building blocks to improve the performance of multi-cell networks. These contributions can be carried out for other resource management schemes in next-generation cellular networks (i.e., 5G) that try to improve the spectral efficiency in multi-domains.

Resource allocation and scheduling in the downlink of OFDMA networks supporting heterogeneous traffic will be considered in this book. The purpose of resource allocation is to allocate sub-carriers and power to users to meet their service requirements while maintaining fairness among users and maximizes resource utilization. To achieve these objectives, utility-based resource allocation schemes along with some state-of-the-art resource allocation paradigms such as power control, adaptive modulation and coding, sub-carrier assignment, and scheduling are adopted. On one hand, a utility-based resource allocation scheme improves resource utilization by allocating enough resources based on users' quality of service (QoS) satisfaction. On the other hand, resource allocation based on utilities is not trivial when users demand different traffic types with convex and nonconvex utilities.
