Excerpt from Report on Transportation Business in the United States at the Eleventh Census, 1890, Vol. 1: Transportation by Land The value or cost of property of steam railroads and street railways in the above summary is taken from the balance sheets of the various companies and corporations. The value of property used in the express business is derived from returns made by the companies. The data of transportation by water were collected by means of schedules addressed to vessel captains, owners, or agents. The significant point is that the aggregates presented are derived from returns made for individual vessels, except in a few cases where returns were accepted which covered the operations of fleets owned by individuals or corporations. The exceptional departures from the original plan were less satisfactory in every instance than the returns for individual vessels. An explanation of the omission in the preceding summary of the gross earnings of express companies will be found in the portion of the report devoted to such companies. The gross operating expenses of express companies are To make a complete exhibit of transportation, it would be necessary to add the carriage of mail matter for the United States government, which was not practicable. A report upon express companies was undertaken at the Tenth Census, but it was found that they were not subject to the law under which that census was taken. Statistics of street railways have not been given in the reports of previous censuses. Comparative statistics regarding street railways and express companies at different censuses, therefore, can not be given.
