Excerpt from Report on the Trade of China and Japan As the result of conferences in British Columbia, in the States of Washington. Oregon and California, and also in Hong Kong. Canton, Shanghai, Tientsin and Peking, and the perusal of numerous books, reports, and the publications of the Chinese Maritime Customs, I am satisfied that a development of trade in the North Pacific will occur and that Canada will enjoy an important proportion of that trade. Having regard to the problems in course of solution on both shores of the Pacific. Under con litions which in effect shorten the distance which separates them by lessening the time taken in traversing it. It would appear that the attention of Canada will be directed in greater measure to the Pacific coast and the problems which so immediately affect her western people. The presence in the Orient of ministers in connection with trade representing the late Administration is still remembered. And the visit of the present Minister of Trade and Commerce was warmly welcomed. The development of China in. Regard to her understanding of the need for western methods and goods. Together with the rapid growth of population and manufacture in Canada-demands that inter vals should not be too long between the visits of ministers or leading officers of the Canadian Service in order that changing conditions in regard to trade may be duly set forth with some degree of authority for'consideration in Canada. Excerpt from Yedo and Peking: A Narrative of a Journey to the Capitals of Japan and China The Empire of Japan has been all but closed to the inhabitants of other nations for more than two hundred years. Except a few Dutch and Chinese, who were kept almost like prisoners at Nagasaki, no foreigners have been allowed to reside or trade in the country since about the year 1636. A great and unexpected change has now taken place; Japan has not only Opened some of her ports to foreign trade, but has also sent her Ambassadors to visit many of the principal Courts of Europe and America. Excerpt from China and Japan On November 6, 1900, Miss Emma Penton Kendrick, of Louisville, Kentucky, was married to Doctor John D. Trawick, of Nashville, Tennessee. They left immediately for San Francisco, from which place they sailed for their new home in China. Doctor Trawick is an associate surgeon in the Methodist Hospital at Soochow. Her letters from this far-off Eastern land were so very inter esting that many friends requested that they be given to the public, and some of them were accordingly published in a leading newspaper of Louisville, her native city. Many complimentary things were said of them, and many requests were made that they be put in a more permanent form. Some few of these are printed as an appendix to this book.' It is in response to these requests that this little volume appears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Foreign Trade of China Much has been written about China, but seldom, if ever, from the Chinese point of view. Most of the books given to us by foreign writers have not done the Chinese justice. They generally describe the activities of the foreigner in China in his own terms and solely from his own stand point, and are designed primarily to justify the policy of some power in that country. As to the impression pro duced by those activities upon the Chinese themselves, we are left perfectly in the dark. They tell us that China ought to do this, and that China ought to do that, not for her own benefit, but in order to promote the interest and profit Of the foreigner. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that all the authors have been intentionally unfair, for in some cases the prejudice has been due to the inability to see more than one side of the medal. However, what has been done has been done not the less effectively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from China and the Open Door What trade there may have been by the Chinese frontier in ancient days is not known, but probably it was considerable. China is, and has been, almost unique in its position as absolutely independent of resources from without everything the Chinese people require they have within their own territories. The trade the Chinese carried on in the ancient days, that we know about for certain, was principally on their own coasts, and a few junks went yearly to Japan, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and the islands about the Straits of Malacca, more in quest of luxuries than the necessaries of life. These junks made the voyage by one monsoon and home by the next. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
