Excerpt from Report of the Maryland Commission to the Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition: Together With an Account of Maryland's Work and Exhibits, Submitted to the General Assembly of Maryland Session of 1908 By resolution of your honorable body adopted in the session of 1904, authority was given to the Governor to appoint a Commission of thirteen to submit to the General Assembly of 1906 suggestions as to the legislation necessary for Maryland's participation in the Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition. This Commission recommended an appropriation of not less than $100,000 and that the number of Commissioners be increased to twenty-five with an auxiliary Commission of five women. The General Assembly of 1906 adopted these recommendations with the exception that the appropriation was made $65,000. This sum was much less than the appropriation of other States with which Maryland was in competition, but by careful expenditure and the cheerful cooperation of all, we were enabled to make a record for our State which was unsurpassed, if not unequaled. In addition to erecting, furnishing and maintaining a beautiful State Building out of the money allowed to us we gave from our resources $5000 for an exhibit of horticulture and agriculture; $500 for a geological exhibit and over $2,000 for other exhibits and expenses of exhibits. We have the honor to report to you that Maryland's part in every respect was signally successful and we are confident that great good has resulted to our State from this expenditure of the public money.
