Excerpt from Thirty-Ninth Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Mines: For the Year Ending December 31, 1913 The state mining laws provide for twelve inspectors and a chief inspector, whose duty it is to see that the laws are so enforced as to reduce to a minimum the necessary dangers of the mining industry. The report of their activities during the year ending December 31, 1913, is presented in this report, which was prepared by the Department of Mines. The statistical report of the Industrial Commission of Ohio, Division of Mines, was compiled by the Department of Statistics and Investiga tion, and will be published by that department. On September 1, 1913, the Industrial Commission assumed charge of seven state departments of which the Mining Department was one, and while the statistics for this department were collected and turned over to the statistical Department, April, 1914, as well as the remainder of the report, it was decided later by the Department of Investigation and Statistics to separate the re port into two different parts, and the part pertaining to the inspection of mines was returned to 113 November, 1914, for publication. Excerpt from Annual Report of the Department of Mines for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1920: In Two Sections Since the year 1883 the average gross tons of coal produced per each fatality inside the mines have been 161, 480 tons, including 1920, which is 278, 716 gross tons. At the mines where fatal accidents occurred there was an average of one life lost for each 89, 891 gross tons of coal produced. The 287 lives lost inside the mines during the year occurred at 211 mines' employing 23, 684 persons inside and produced gross tons of coal, while the other mines at which not a single life was lost inside the mines produced gross tons.
