Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sketches The suggestion of this volume came from two students of former years who have attained distinction in letters. If the approbation of old friends in whose judgment and good taste one has confidence is endorsed by acceptance on the part of the first publisher to whom the material is submitted, and a fair offer is made, it is excusable perhaps to yield to a secretly cherished wish and bring old papers out again from their dusty retirement. If the reception of the volume should be as kindly as that of the individual papers, the author would have no reason to complain. Many thanks are hereby expressed to the journals whose kindness permits the reprinting of the papers, namely: the Atlantic Monthly, Christian Union, Independent, Methodist Review, Cumberland Presbyterian Review, Sewanee Review, South Atlantic Quarterly, Transactions of the Wisconsin Academy, Vanderbilt Quarterly, Christian Advocate, Southern Christian Advocate, and Nashville American. Excerpt from Sketches and Reminiscences This book is published neither for profit nor for fame, but from a sense of duty to my family and kindred I have resolved to leave behind me in a shape easy of preservation some record of my ancestry and myself, feeling sensibly the lack of duty in this regard on the part of those who have gone before me. The right-thinking men and women of the State are at this day troubled with sore regret that so little of record has been left of their ancestors, and great efforts are being made to gather information concerning them. Some will call these sketches the work of foolishness and vanity. To such I will say that it is a sad thing for the State and her citizens that for two hundred years there have lived and died so few of her sons obnoxious to a like charge. Besides what is said of myself in these sketches, much is narrated which concerns others, and which is, or ought to be, of interest. Be this as it may, it is a satisfaction and comfort to me to know that I have placed in their reach these facts. I have inserted here the description of the Battle of the Crater, by Capt. B. L. Beaty, of Company K, Twenty-Sixth Regiment, S. C. V. Infantry, because I regard it as good as any I have read, if not the very best. Considering the number engaged, the space on which the battle was fought, its appalling opening, and the number slain and captured, it was the bloodiest battle of the war, and from first to last, Captain Beatty, of Horry, was a gallant participant, and the men of Horry were among the bravest of the brave on that memorable day. Excerpt from Reminiscences and Sketches, Historical and Biographical But while his contemporaries say he used his sarcasm cruelly at times, struck with venom as if he hated his fellowmen, they bear undivided testimony to many acts of generosity and kindness to the poor and needy, and that he was genial and attractive to young men. When Mr. Pu, lately one of the leaders of the Lancaster county bar, first went to Lancaster, as a young man, he had letters of introduction to F. And Stevens. F. Discouraged him from settling there and repelled him with coldness. Stevens met him pleasantly; said it was a good place for a thorough young lawyer, and at the first court came stumping into his office and asked him to go into a case with him; said he wanted to see the stud he was made of. Excerpt from Mammy's Reminiscences: And Other Sketches The quaint humor of their happy, sim ple natures has been turned into a wit which they never possessed, and the croon ing of their lullabies the chanting of their religious frenzies, the musical monotone of their field songs, have become clever ballads which they never composed and never sang. Excerpt from Reminiscences, Sketches and Addresses: Selected From My Papers During a Ministry of Forty-Five Years in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas At what time my family crossed the Atlantic I am unable to say. I think it was in 1732. But my grand father, Joseph Hutchison, was a native American, and was born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, near the spot where now stands the city of Harrisburg, the capital of the State.
