The purpose of this paper is to accentuate on the relationships between knowledge, technology recipient, technology supplier and relationship characteristics and degree of inter-firm technology transfer. A conceptual framework was developed and a review of relevant literature was conducted. Building on the integrated knowledge-based view and organizational learning perspectives, and previous technology transfers models, this study proposes a model in providing explanations on the relationships between technology transfer characteristics and degree of technology transfer. This model also conceptualizes the relationship between the degree of technology transfer and local firms' performance, specifically at corporate and human resource performance. Building on intra and inter-firm KT literature this paper extends the literature by conceptualizing the relationships between four critical dimensions of TTCHARS (KCHAR, TRCHAR, TSCHAR, and RCHAR) and TTDEG in a single holistic model to explain the relationships between each group of TTCHARS and degree of inter-firm TT in IJVs.

The main objective of this paper is to empirically examine the effects of four critical technology transfer characteristics: knowledge, technology recipient, technology supplier, and relationship characteristics on two distinct dimensions of degree of technology transfer, namely, degree of tacit and explicit knowledge. Using the quantitative analytical approach, the theoretical model and hypotheses in this study were tested based on empirical data gathered from 128 joint venture companies registered with the Registrar of Companies of Malaysia (ROC). Data obtained from the survey questionnaires were analyzed using the correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression analyses. The results revealed that relationship characteristics have the strongest significant effects on both degrees of tacit and explicit knowledge followed by technology supplier and recipient characteristics. Contrary to the study's prediction, but still consistent with the recent development in literature, knowledge characteristics have only significantly affected degree of explicit knowledge not degree of tacit knowledge. The study has bridged the literature gaps by providing empirical evidence on the effects of four critical technology transfer characteristics: knowledge, technology recipient, technology supplier, and relationship characteristics on two distinct dimensions of degree of inter-firm technology transfer: degree of tacit and explicit knowledge in IJVs in a single model.

The objective of this study is to propose a holistic model of inter-firm technology transfer (TT) based on an integrated knowledge-based-view (KBV) and organizational learning (OL) perspectives in conceptualizing the critical links between technology transfer characteristics: knowledge, technology recipient, technology supplier and relationship characteristics (TTCHARS) and degree of technology transfer (TTDEG) in international joint ventures (IJVs). Since the current TT issue now is centered on efficiency and effectiveness of technology transfer as an efficient formal vehicle to internalize foreign technologies as compared to direct import of goods, licensing and foreign direct investment, the advancement of the holistic model is to provide a complete view on the significant effect of technology transfer characteristics and their dimensions on degree of technology transfer in IJV which eventually could contribute to the increase of local companies' competitiveness, indigenous technical capabilities, technological development, and potential for local innovation. In the study's model, hypotheses are developed to describe the relationships between TTCHARS and TTDEG based on the underlying KBV and OL perspectives.

While realizing that technologies, knowledge, and competencies are the technology supplier's main source of competitive advantage, the current inter-firm technology transfer (TT) issue in international joint ventures (IJVs) revolves around the extent of degree of technologies that are transferred by the suppliers to recipient partners in terms of tacit and explicit knowledge. Previous studies on intra-firm knowledge transfer have acknowledged the significant influence of technology actors and facilitators/barriers such as the knowledge transferred, source, recipient and contextual/relational characteristics in the knowledge transfer process. Although previous studies have established the significant relationships between technology transfer determinants and technology transfer, however, these relationships could possibly have been influenced by the MNCs' country of origin (MNCCOO). Based on the underlying knowledge-based view (KBV) and organizational learning (OL) perspectives, the main objective of this paper is to empirically examine the moderating effects of the MNCs' country of origin in the relationships between technology recipient characteristics: absorptive capacity (ACAP) and recipient collaborativeness (RCOL) and two distinct dimensions of degrees of technology transfer: degrees of tacit and explicit knowledge within IJVs. Using the moderated multiple regression (MMR), the theoretical models and hypotheses in this study were tested based on empirical data gathered from 128 joint venture companies registered with the Registrar of Companies of Malaysia (ROC). The results revealed that the MNCs' country of origin has significantly affected the relationships between technology recipient characteristics (absorptive capacity and recipient collaborativeness) and degree of explicit knowledge; where the relationship was found stronger for Asian MNCs than Western MNCs. However, the MNCs' country of origin did not moderate the relationship between technology recipient characteristics and degree of tacit knowledge.

The main objective of this paper is to contribute to the existing Technology Transfer (TT) literature by reviewing the evolution and development of the previous TT models which include the traditional TT model, models developed after 1990s, other related theoretical foundations underlying TT models, and the current TT models which have strong influence of knowledge-based view (KBV) and organizational learning (OL) perspectives. Since the current management researchers have a strong focus on TT within strategic alliance and other collaborative ventures, this review highlights the significant influence of KBV and OL perspectives on inter-firm TT models. This review attempts to help stimulate the direction of both future theoretical and empirical studies on inter-firm technology transfer specifically 1) on how KBV and OL perspectives could play significant role in explaining the complex relationships between the supplier and recipient in inter-firm technology transfer 2) the tradeoffs that involve between properties of technology, protecting proprietary technologies, competitiveness of the supplier, willingness to transfer technology, and learning attitudes of the recipient in strategic alliances and JVs, and 3) on how KVB and OL perspectives could be integrated in a holistic model to explain the relationships between knowledge transferred, the recipient, the supplier, relationship characteristics and degree of technology transfer.

Low carbon technology transfer to developing countries has been both a lynchpin of, and a key stumbling block to a global deal on climate change. This book brings together for the first time in one place the work of some of the world's leading contemporary researchers in this field. It provides a practical, empirically grounded guide for policy makers and practitioners, while at the same time making new theoretical advances in combining insights from the literature on technology transfer and the literature on low carbon innovation. The book begins by summarizing the nature of low carbon technology transfer and its contemporary relevance in the context of climate change, before introducing a new theoretical framework through which effective policy mechanisms can be analyzed. The north-south, developed-developing country differences and synergies are then introduced together with the relevant international policy context. Uniquely, the book also introduces questions around the extent to which current approaches to technology transfer under the international policy regime might be considered to be 'pro-poor'. Throughout, the book draws on cutting edge empirical work to illustrate the insights it affords. The book concludes by setting out constructive ways forward towards delivering on existing international commitments in this area, including practical tools for decision makers.

This book provides evidence on how FDI leads to knowledge and technology transfers towards domestic firms by paying attention to the role of multinational companies. The author presents a comprehensive empirical research conducted at firm-level in the Turkish automotive industry. Using a representative sample of face-to-face in-depth interviews with top-executives and a survey of top level managers of domestic suppliers, the research analyzes the existence, channels, intensity and determinants, and the kind of transfers that occur at both inter- and intra-firm level in the industry. The author contends that policies aimed at attracting FDI flows should be re-examined under the findings and insights of this study since it is a necessary – although not sufficient - condition to have an efficient absorptive capacity level and/or skilled human capital stock in order to benefit from these flows. This study has policy implications for the automotive industry as well as practical recommendations for the public institutions and top-executives in emerging country companies and multinationals in order to conceive and implement science and technology policies in supporting the knowledge transfers.

The inter-firm technology transfers (TT) in collaborative joint ventures (JVs) often involve tradeoffs between the willingness of technology supplier to transfer a considerable amount of technologies to technology recipient and degree of protection of the proprietary technology, knowledge and competencies as the source of the supplier's competitive advantage. Thus, technology transfers through JVs, although have been acknowledged in many studies as the most efficient mechanism in internalizing the partner's technology, knowledge and skill, have frequently involved various facilitators, actors and complicated relationship between partners that have direct impact on the degree or amount of technology transferred in JVs. Building on the integrated knowledge-based view and organizational learning perspectives, and previous TT models, this study proposes a holistic TT model in providing explanations on the relative and simultaneous effects of technology transfer characteristics (TTCHARS) on degree of technology transfer (TTDEG). Subsequently, the holistic TT model also conceptualizes the effect of TTDEG on local firms' performance dimensions namely corporate and human resource performance, and the moderating effects of MNCs' firm size, age of JV, MNCs' country of origin, and types of industries in the TTCHARS-TTDEG relationship.
