How would you go about rebuilding a technological society from scratch? If our technological society collapsed tomorrow what would be the one book you would want to press into the hands of the postapocalyptic survivors? What crucial knowledge would they need to survive in the immediate aftermath and to rebuild civilization as quickly as possible? Human knowledge is collective, distributed across the population. It has built on itself for centuries, becoming vast and increasingly specialized. Most of us are ignorant about the fundamental principles of the civilization that supports us, happily utilizing the latest—or even the most basic—technology without having the slightest idea of why it works or how it came to be. If you had to go back to absolute basics, like some sort of postcataclysmic Robinson Crusoe, would you know how to re-create an internal combustion engine, put together a microscope, get metals out of rock, or even how to produce food for yourself? Lewis Dartnell proposes that the key to preserving civilization in an apocalyptic scenario is to provide a quickstart guide, adapted to cataclysmic circumstances. The Knowledge describes many of the modern technologies we employ, but first it explains the fundamentals upon which they are built. Every piece of technology rests on an enormous support network of other technologies, all interlinked and mutually dependent. You can’t hope to build a radio, for example, without understanding how to acquire the raw materials it requires, as well as generate the electricity needed to run it. But Dartnell doesn’t just provide specific information for starting over; he also reveals the greatest invention of them all—the phenomenal knowledge-generating machine that is the scientific method itself. The Knowledge is a brilliantly original guide to the fundamentals of science and how it built our modern world.

If you are struggling with life, this book may help you become a new, different, and better person. You don't have to be bad to want to be better. You will answer several series of questions to help you find yourself and identify your attitude - the way you think and feel - about life. The decisions you make, your choices, the actions you take, will determine the direction of your spiritual life, your personal life, and your relationships. Your marriage, family, career, friendships, health, eternal destination, etc. are at stake. You may have a hard time believing in yourself. You may believe you have made too many bad decisions, failed too many times, had too many losses, received too much criticism, and you are mentally, emotionally, and/or spiritually defeated. There is hope because there is help. You may need help in seeing your strengths and your abilities. You may need help in believing there is a better way, a better life, a better future. You need to know you can experience a new beginning, a new, different, and better life. Some people will need help in finding a better way, a better life, and a better future. Some people will need to be helpers. This book will help prepare you for that assignment. If God chooses you to be the helper, you need to listen and learn, try to be understanding even though you do not understand. Be patient, thoughtful, kind, and genuinely caring. Learn to ask the right questions and give them hope and direction. Hear more than what they are saying, hear their fear, their frustration, their loneliness, their hurt, and then you may understand. Look them in the eyes; be attentive to every facial expression. The Bible will be our guide on becoming a new, different, and better person so we can be a happy camper. The Bible says we can experience a satisfying way of life. Romans 12:2 is the scripture from which we launch this book. Romans 12:2 (TLB) "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you." You can have a new, different, and better life. I think many that have become the most caring, thoughtful, sensitive, and compassionate, are the ones that dealt with failure, circumstances beyond our control, and accepted it as part of life, and started over to make life better. They let the failure refine, sharpen, and enhance their life. Conflict, disappointment, and/or failure does not mean the end of all good in our life. It does not mean we are worthless. It does not mean the future is hopeless. It means something is wrong, something is broken, something is not right and it needs to be fixed. A weakness of the human mind may be that we think about the present more than we do about the potential end. We focus on what we want right now or how we feel instead of where this may lead us. This book will help you design a plan that will make the end good for you. We are talking about identifying our problems, our hurts, our failures, our losses, and securing a plan to resolve these issues; and have a good ending. We may not be able to do anything about what happens to us, but we can do something about the way we respond to it. Our response can be one that will lead to a good ending, or it can lead to a bad ending.

A young entrepreneur and sociologist shows readers how to reach personal fulfillment using the same strategies that power Silicon Valley's greatest startups. As an entrepreneur, Anna Akbari learned that one of the best things about startups is their ability to “pivot” quickly—basically a euphemism for failing and starting over. And she quickly found that personal success is no different. It’s not just about developing and following the right process but also having a good idea. And that demands rigor and daily maintenance—far beyond a few positive affirmations. Like any Silicon Valley startup, the business of life is not as glamorous as its Instagram account would make it seem. What do you do when planning is not an option? When control is out of your reach? You isolate the small stuff, experiment constantly, and use the results to lay a more sustainable foundation for the future. You validate your idealized vision by testing it out in bite-sized increments. You see what sticks, integrate, and move forward. And inevitably, you experience a series of failures along the way, but those failures are key to your next success. Living a start up life is about maximizing flexibility and measuring on-going results, not avoiding failure or reaching one particular end goal. It's about embracing defeat, analyzing it, and failing up. In Startup Your Life, Akbari shows that after all, it's often the stumbles that pave the way for real happiness.

First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.

By cutting these toxins out of our diets, we can achieve fast and easy weight loss. Each day of the plan features menus, exercise routines, relaxation and stress reduction exercises, and a few blank pages in order for the reader to keep a journal of his or her progress. Dr. Hyman also discusses the philosophy of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, along with its practical ramifications, i.e. keeping the weight off. The UltraSimple Diet is based on his New York Times bestselling book, UltraMetabolism, which explores the cutting-edge science of nutrigenomics—the science of how food talks to our genes.
