Excerpt from The Tennyson Epoch The series of which this volume is the ninth may he said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' In this volume, for reasons given in the Introduction, I have been compelled to include a period which really contains two epochs. My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. Also I avoid those works which are likely to be read elsewhere. For this reason Dickens, Thackeray, and the novelists generally, are here omitted. Excerpt from Tales From Tennyson The 'Tales' in this volume are an attempt to put within the reach of younger readers the substance of the cycle of Arthurian romance which is contained in Tennyson's 'Idylls of the King, ' preserving as far as possible both the letter and the spirit of the late Laureate's work, with some 'faint Homeric echoes' of the ancient chronicles that form the basis of each story. It is hoped that these 'Tales' may effect two objects dear to the writer's heart - one, that they may induce the few who look at them to read the 'Idylls of the King' for themselves, if they have not already done so, and to re-read them if they have; the other, that they may awaken some further interest in the legendary history of that mysterious King whose name, as we tramp or cycle through the British Isles in our holiday rambles, starts up before us from hill and crag, cairn and cromlech, and grassy mound, and has become a household word to most of us from the fairy-tales of the nursery. Who was King Arthur? Was there ever a King Arthur at all? If so, when did he live, and what was he like? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Age of Tennyson Edited There is nothing left remarkable Beneath the visiting moon.' Hence in the beginning of the period there is on the part of all but the greatest a tendency to trifle. Sometimes even the greatest are not quite free from it; and in the early poetry of Tennyson we may detect evidence that the writer was as yet unmoved by any great interest. Excerpt from The Teaching of Tennyson Has Tennyson any message, or is he merely "an idle singer of an empty day"? Is he content to leave us in admiration of his beautiful art without a guiding gleam for the conduct of life? Does he give us any great verities upon which we may stand, as upon rock, in the midst of the surging voices of doubt? Does he sing of the ultimate man - the final triumph of the race; or docs he wail a requiem over lost ideals, and a creed out-worn? By careful classification of the related poems I have striven, in the following pages, to extract the teaching of the poet. We shall find that he not only gives an ethical law for the guidance of life, but an answer to those deeper questions that utter their tremulous voices in the shrine of the soul.
