Most high school administrators, teachers, and staff concentrate on the student who is in the college preparatory track, while those who may not even finish high school have less attention paid to their curriculum and their educational needs. If the role of the school librarian is to prepare all students for lifelong learning, school librarians must work closely with teachers in charge of courses preparing students to go from school to work. They need to remind other teachers who are in general courses that many of the students in their classrooms who will not go to college, but will take jobs which pay them much more than the college graduate makes in many areas of the work force. This book points out the role of the school librarian in working with aIl the students and maps out the route to take to make this happen.

'...Material presented here is replete with concrete new ideas not only for collaboration, but also for funding, training, personal involvement, Web-based instruction, and other concepts too numerous to mention. And the best thing about these ideas is that they are not the usual endlessly-discussed theories_these are ideas that have worked_and some which have failed_in the real world...Despite the myriad new works available today related to library instruction in general and information literacy in particular, none is devoted solely to collaborative efforts between teaching faculty and librarians. This is where Library User Education: Powerful Learning, Powerful Partnerships shines_just as in the real world, it's all about collaboration.' _Angela Weiler, Portal

Excerpt from Lessons on the Use of the School Library: For Rural Schools, State Graded Schools, Village and City Grades; Also for Use in High Schools in the Giving of Such Library Instruction Outlined as Has Not Been Given in the Grades There are over one and one-half million books in Wisconsin school libraries, with large additions in the aggregate each year. These books have been a power for good in the schools of the state. And yet the returns possible from the investment in school libraries are greatly in excess of those yet realized. It is so short a time since there were practically no school libraries that teaching practices, so far as the school library is concerned, are still to a large extent dominated by methods and courses of study which originated when the textbook reigned supreme. To help make the school library as effective an agency as possible in the work of the schools and in the lives of those who attend them these lessons have been prepared. Specifically, they are intended for the guidance of teachers in giving to their pupils definite lessons on the use of the school library. The Wisconsin law now provides that candidates for county or city teachers' certificates, and hence also for state certificates by examination, shall write on the cataloging and use of school libraries. Applicants for third grade certificates were included in this law beginning January 1, 1915. In the Wisconsin township library list of 1910-'11 instructions are given on the cataloging and care of elementary school libraries and the high school library list of 1909 contains similar instructions for high school libraries. The present publication, as an incident to its main purpose, will help teachers prepare for examinations on the use of school libraries. Labeled A Nation at Risk, Americans are urgently seeking reform in their public school systems. While many promising programs are being developed, they have not yet been validated. The national conference Making Schools Work for Underachieving Minority Students shared the best of what is presently known and deliberated on the implications for research, policy, and practice. Sponsored by CRESST (Center for Research on Evaluation Standards and Student Testing), The National Urban League, and the National Council of LaRaza, the conference was financed by the U.S. Department of Education. Closely following the structure of the conference, this volume's contributors examine education's current status. They then investigate potentially promising approaches to specific problem areas. Contributors treat issues of evaluation and testing, and conclude by addressing the potential of collaborative efforts. Responding to a major challenge, community groups and organizations throughout the country are seeking answers to the problem of underachieving minority students. This volume builds on these shared interests and is a first step toward an intervention process. Topics covered include: creating effective instructional programs; reducing the dropout rate; preparing students for secondary and postsecondary success; helping limited English proficient students; and improving teacher quality. The volume's contributors hope to promote dialogue on promising practices, foster collaboration, identify critical R & D needs and collaborative arrangements, and identify testing and evaluation issues for subsequent inquiry.
