In 'Rain and Other South Sea Stories,' William Somerset Maugham takes readers on a captivating journey through the exotic South Seas, painting a vivid picture of the colonial experience through a series of short stories. Maugham's literary style is marked by a keen eye for detail and a masterful use of irony, bringing to life the complexities of human nature and the impact of cultural clashes. Set against the backdrop of British imperialism, these stories offer a glimpse into the lives of colonizers and colonized, exploring themes of love, desire, and power dynamics in a foreign land. William Somerset Maugham, a prolific writer and renowned playwright, draws inspiration from his own experiences traveling across the South Pacific to craft this collection. His firsthand observations and interactions with the diverse cultures of the region lend authenticity and depth to the narratives, making them both compelling and thought-provoking. I highly recommend 'Rain and Other South Sea Stories' to readers interested in exploring the complexities of colonialism and cultural encounters. Maugham's poignant storytelling and subtle commentary make this collection a timeless masterpiece worth delving into.

"Beauty is an ecstasy; it is as simple as hunger. There is really nothing to be said about it. It is like the perfume of a rose: you can smell it and that is all." -W. Somerset Maugham After working in British Intelligence during World War I, William Somerset Maugham set off to regain his health by traveling to Asia, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands. During this trip he gather materials and wrote the stories that appeared in 1921 in The Trembling of a Leaf. The six short stories and two "sketches" include the famous story "Rain"-adapted for both theater and film as Sadie Thompson-a story about the ironic consequences of obsession. Its less known companions, however, have their own merits. "Macintosh" is a taut psychological study of two officials on a remote tropic island. "The Fall of Edward Barnard" is a brief Bildungsroman about what is important in life, a pre-cursor of Maugham's well known novel, The Razor's Edge. Of course love is always a subject of the tropics and Maugham's deft, ironic handling of the theme in "Red" and "Honolulu" is masterful. But it is "The Pool" that tells a poignant and tragic tale about the pitfalls for love across cultures. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller," Maugham once wrote. These short stories are some of his best, and among the best ever written about the exotic South Seas. This collection contains eight stories by British writer Somerset Maugham: The Pacific--Mackintosh--The Fall Of Edward Barnard--Red--The Pool--Honolulu--Rain--Envoi. Includes an active table of contents for easy navigation. THE TREMBLING OF A LEAF was also published under the title "Rain, and Other Stories" after one of the stories was adapted for a film starring Joan Crawford.

William S. Maugham spent a few months traveling in the South Pacific during the World War I. Some of the best stories he wrote are found in this book - which occur in Samoa, Tahiti and Hawaii - and they show the colonial life and the European experience with the local culture, with a strong Eurocentric viewpoint. "Rain" is the most famous of the stories in the book, which was first published in 1921.
